Growing under Lights

stunted plants under grow light

I'm not currently growing plants under a grow light, but I have before and when I did they ended up stunted. One of two things happened...

1.they grew to a certain stage then quit growing. I remedied this by giving them diluted fertilizer and although they grew they ended up stunted.

2.they ended up stunted

I'm just wondering why this happens; I know this generally happens because the plant is stressed out but there's various causes for that-overwatering, underwatering, too hot, too cold, not fertilizing enough and/or fertilizing too much. I also know that placing too many plants under a grow light can cause the above mentioned problems too. What do I do to avoid this?

Hello Amy,

I can't give you good short answers to your questions. And my experience is limited to indoor zinnias, and they involve a lot of factors. Setting the timers on your lights determines the photoperiod your plants see, and photoperiod can have a big effect on how plants grow. But that is just one of many factors affecting your plants. I suggest studying a good book on the entire subject of growing plants under lights, like for example, Gardening Under Lights. (a clickable link)

Hopefully, others can provide some helpful responses to your questions. They are good questions.

What medium are they growing in?

What is the air temperature?

Have you checked online? You could copy and paste into a word program or what ever you choice where you would like to place the information. Then you would be able to add notes which you collect no matter where or who the information comes from.

JW, "...my serrano is showing some darkening/brittleness on some leaves, it's not just confined to the edges of the leave either. If it were just confined to the lower leaves I wouldn't be too concerned but I see some leaves are effected in the mid section as well." Well, I would be concerned even if it were just the lower leaves. Everything about your plant's appearance communicates to you the state of its health and nutrition. The darkening makes me suspect a phosphorous deficiency. This is what a phosphorous deficiency in corn looks like. I don't have a link to a similar picture for a Serrano pepper. "They are in well drained soil and I feed high quality organic liquid nutes." I have to admit that I am not that enthusiastic about organic nutrients for culture under lights. Do you have an analysis of your organic nutes that you can post here, so that we can determine how much available phosphorous they have? Also, what source of water are you using? I prefer to use rainwater or melted snow. Otherwise you need an analysis of your water supply and you run the risk of salts accumulations from the water itself. Hi Kevin, It looks like those lights are surely working! My Penang Peach FINALLY went dormant. I was sad to see the blooms fade and drop, along with the inflo, but I now have 3 tips that are going to make this tree fill out nicely. I have to say that having the HPS light has really helped my plumeria stay nice and healthy. I have noticed that even when there dormant, they are much more healthy than before when I just kept them in the dark cool basement. Andrew

Are you able to list the plants in question? I'd be uncomfortable saying anything w/o knowing that. And by seed-starting lights, do you mean fluorescent? What style is the fixture? Long tubes? Are your windows already spoken-for by other plants?

I do not think grow lights are causing the stunting here. If you can provide specifics or growing conditions -which plants, what lights, distance from plants, how long are the lights on, temperature, humidity, potting mix used - then we may be able to help figure out where the problem lies.
