Hi wrote a long answer but apparently did not 'submit'...how aggravating. Could be rain, could be too good soil; I think it is part the nature of plant unless it is starved and in the sun. Here's what to do at this point (many of us do this rouitinely, regardless of variables) 1 break off at ground level (or snip) skinny little stems. Gives the bigger ones room to spread. 2 cut remaining stems back by half. Leave no stubs: ugly. Use your fingers or clippers. You may want to clip back again by late June, maybe not by half but a third. Not a science: live and learn. Plant produces multiple small flower heads instead of great big one (phlox, monarda behave the same) I think it colors up the same time as unclipped, just not splaying open. 3. Borrow, buy "the well tended perennial garden" by Tracy distabato aust" A bible for guiding plant growth, getting the shape and blooms you want from perennials; delaying blooming; prolonging plants impact, sensible short cuts for the busy gardener; some simple design principles and tips. jessew - these are tough plants. Move anytime. I've moved them both fall & spring. In fact a garden writer in my state suggests to lift & break feeder roots in late spring so that the plants stay shorter & flop less. We have a wet Oct - June, so only 3 months of dry weather in summer right before bloom. I water them during the dry season, but mostly because nearby plants or lawn is watered. If in pots I also water some, but not a lot. They prefer well drained soil. I've kept some clumps as they were dug for weeks in a cardboard box & they still lived. It's easy to divide them by the way, so you could just cut out a chunk to take along & leave the rest.

Thanks for the link! I guess there is a chance that they are not getting adequate drainage. I have a large planter that is attached to my house.. probably 10ft long by 3 ft wide. Its also 3-4 ft tall. It was already filled with dirt when we bought the house, so I have no idea how the drainage is down under that top layer. Maybe before I go planting more sedum (I have an order on the way) I should remove some of the soil and add a layer of gravel and some perlite or sand? What do you think? Thanks again! Kim

Mary, First I would say relax you really can't do any harm to these guys. I have divided them by simply taking my shovel and cutting them in half right in place not disturbing the one half. I have also dug the entire clump up and cut the plant in half with a saw, replanting one half. I have also dug up and potted pieces of plant material for a swap forgot them under a shrub and re-discovered them three years later still happily growing and ready for this years swap. If your clumps are very large make certain your shovel has a sharp edge as it will be difficult to cut through. What other plants are you growing with your sedum?
