Color mismatch quartz slab

the inconsistency in the color of the backsplash slab is noticeable. They are two different shades of white and it’s not a shadow from the lights. would you accept this? Thanks

No, I would not accept it. Were you there at the time of delivery and installation of the countertop and backsplash? If not, who was, and how was this accepted? I was lucky enough to be workng from home when I had my kitchen renovated, and my husband was retired. We inspected everything carefully prior to installation.

You've got much bigger problems than a color match. I'm betting that cooktop is not installed per the manufacturer's installation instructions and the first hot pot on a rear burner is going to scorch the engineered stone backsplash. That's ugly and a fire hazard 'cause that stuff burns.

I just had the same thing happen to me with Della Terra Vittoria White quartz from AZ Tile. Manufactured by santamargarita. I am sick over the result. If I had known it could vary this much I would have tried to get a dyelot # from our bathroom counter install just a few months prior. (Or chosen something else!) I thought since we had our sample (and one full counter installed that matched said sample) that we knew what this would look like. I am really disappointed. Our bathroom counter is a true white with beautiful veining and depth variation if you look closely. The kitchen counter slabs have sparse veining and have an overall grey, almost rosy undertone. It looks like a mottled pattern with some veining instead of a veined counter with some mottling. And they are an entirely different shade. The kitchen counters wash out against our wall and backsplash and almost have a pink hue when viewed next to the white cabinets. If it's a known quantity that there is this little consistency, they should be required to provide a sample from the dye lot you are purchasing. And insist that customers preview the slabs before finalizing the sale. I like everyone else was told that quartz was consistent and that was unnecessary. I pulled the trigger on this remodel because I wanted to love it. It's not reasonable to expect customers to be expert enough to head this off.

I have had Vermont Danby, the Olympian White variety, for over 4 years. If you go with any marble, you need to understand its properties before you purchase it, so you won't be surprised. It is indeed more dense than other marbles, and does not stain, meaning that it does not discolor from coffee, tea, wine, berries, etc. I have no discolorations on the marble, BUT I do have lots of etching. It is a calcium-based stone, and as such will etch from anything acidic--wine, vinegar, pickles, citrus, tomatoes, even hard water. There's no way to prevent it, as etching is a wearing away of the stone due to a chemical reaction of the stone with the acid. There's also no way to get rid of the etches unless you have the stone re-honed or re-polished. Also, you can only see the etches when the light hits the stone in a certain way. And honed marble shows the etches less than polished. It is also relatively soft, as stones go, and chips easily. The first chip I got was from dropping a glass from the upper cabinet, which not only broke the glass, but the glass left small white chips on the surface of the marble. Of course I panicked and called the installer who came and filled them in and smoothed the surface. After that I have lots more chips, especially around the sink and on the edges from banging pots, bottles, etc., while working in the kitchen. I haven't called them back to fix them, as I just learned to live with it. So if you think you can live with a counter top surface that isn't going to look as good as the day it was installed, and has reminders of all the entertaining and cooking you do in the kitchen, then you probably will do all right with marble. If not, then you might want to go with something more durable. BUT realize that all of these surfaces are in a work room, and will show wear and tear sooner or later. Good luck!

had the same awful experience. bought a total of 5 premade sparkly quartz counters from Window Depot. Paid $420. a slab. $2400. install. Kitchen came out terrible. Devalues the house. Window Depot will replace 1 slab. $750. install. Slabs still wont match. Best outcome is it might look better. Buyer Beware!

since you had to buy two slabs, would have been nice if they gave you the option of book-matched slabs. As an example, this is quartz bookmatched slabs. at the very least, they should have done two slabs from identical dye lots. And, attempted to line up veining, even if they aren't identical I wouldn't accept it. And yes, ALWAYS view the slabs you purchase in person.

They went to a lot of finagling to get the larger vein to give you the impression they are a match...

The difference in color makes the seam pop--not what anyone wants. Sounds like Joseph has a great out for you--you need something different behind the cook top even when it's installed properly if that's flammable.

Joseph is right, that quartz will scorch behind a gas stove. You can use it behind induction and maybe electric but if gas is on high and licks the ouside of the pot, bye bye backsplash. Ive read they are heat resistant up to 200 degrees.

No way should that plastic fake stone should have been used as abcksplash behind that cooktop so count your blessings get it removed and get a nice tile backsplash everywhere or do a stainless one behind that cook top since the seam is right where you need to change the backsplash

As already stated not a match and shouldn’t be behind stove top. So since there is a seal there anyway get tue mismatched piece out and finish the back safely.

Thank you all for the input. i wouldve never known. i cant seem to find any info on the internet but is there any california mechanical code that states how much clearance there should be between the stove and the wall? cause they installed my cooktop totally touching the wall wtf

The code usuall reads something like "Appliances shall be installed per the manufacturer's installation instructions", thereby making the instructions the law. What is the cooktop brand please?

Look at the installation instructions for your cook top. That will tell you what the clearances should be. All cooktops and ranges have different clearances.

The cooktop should not be all the way back against the backsplash.

Can you take a photo showing how much space they left in front of the cooktop?

Can you measure how deep your counters are?

You need 3 3/8" between the cooktop and any combustible surface in the rear.

And I bet that won’t be nearly enough to not scorch the quartz. Which will not be warrantied by either the quartz maker, Samsung, or your GC, even if you follow the specs.

I have a beautiful Silestone quartz counter and same Silestone backsplash behind my Samsung gas range. I have 8” between my backsplash and the back burner. When I use my back burners (which are simmer burners) my backsplash always remains cool, never warm. My silestone quartz backsplash looks as good today as the day of installation (which was several years ago). I cook from scratch and use my gas range often. I love my quartz backsplash: one lovely piece 30” wide by 27.5” long: easy to clean too.

Im not at home to take pictures or measurements sorry but thank u joseph corlett and everyone here im gonna call them out about the seams, the mismatch of quartz, the stove literally touching the backsplash and the hood width not matching the stove width (my city code requires it match). im so mad right now. hope they fix it and we dont end up in court i still owe them 15k but im not paying them a dime until they fix it

@kupeps Oh Lord do I feel your pain! I just want to say that I'm sorry you're going through this and have to learn the hard way that YOU need to know the codes, installation specs etc and can't rely on designers or contractors! I hope you can at least get them to agree to remove the off color part of the backsplash.
