Mismatched Granite Seam over Dishwasher--Need Advice
Comments (22)"see examples of their work" Excellent point. There seems to be a lot of problems lately with people being disappointed in their granite fabrication. I have to really hold back in posting things like "did you see examples of their seams? did you discuss the edge? Did you see this or that? Did you pick out the slab, the layout? Did you bring samples home to test and to see how it looked in your house" etc. You should ask for references and actually go see installed granite in a home. I actually asked our salesperson (yard and fabricator, all in one shop) if we took the longest and was the most PITAs. She laughed and said No of course. I visited the shop 4 or 5 times. I had numerous samples I kept for months. I saw granite in their showroom on each visit. I saw granite installed in a home. It was actually a friend of mine who had used the place but if I had not seen hers I would have asked for a reference and asked to see the installed granite. I called repeatedly and asked lots of questions, even speaking to the owner. Reviewed the contract in detail. I spoke at length with the templater and then the installers. Watched every move. BTW I visited and got estimates from eight different shops before choosing the one we used. Maybe this was done before....but a thread on how to purchase granite might be in order. Starting at the beginning....how to find a fabricator, what to ask for, what to expect, etc. How we handled the granite decision is how we handle EVERY decision. I know most people (not all) that I know IRL say they just don't have the time or patience to spend the time we do on these things. But they are the ones who call us when they need advise....See Morequartz countertop seam placement
Comments (12)Bri: Your seam should be centered in the sink. It would be much less conspicuous. Fabricators cut for yield when they can get away with it as it makes them more money; your guys took a shot and lost. Post a dimensioned drawing of your layout please. If they had to add the end piece, at least they could have used a Seam Phantom and adhesive manufacturer recommended color adhesive. Had they done so, your seam would be much more inconspicuous. Their guy was color blind or used clear adhesive which appears as the medium gray you show or both. Whites are notoriously difficult to seam inconspicuously with the correct color match adhesive. Do not let them tell you they can't/won't seam at the sink. When your sink is strapped, not clipped, in place, it's one of the strongest areas of your top. Do not let them "buff" the seam. Buffing won't change the adhesive color or the thickness of the seam, however, it can create a noticeable dip and a mismatched finish. Matching factory finish on decks is in the very advanced class and judging by the work on your job, they don't have anyone at that level. That seam placement is not to industry standards; you are not at fault in any way....See MoreColor mismatch quartz slab
Comments (17)Thank you Joseph Cortlett! You posted: “You need 3 3/8" between the cooktop and any combustible surface in the rear.” I have a beautiful Silestone quartz counter and same Silestone backsplash behind my Samsung gas range. I have 8” between my backsplash and the back burner. When I use my back burners (which are simmer burners) my backsplash always remains cool, never warm. My silestone quartz backsplash looks as good today as the day of installation (which was several years ago). I cook from scratch and use my gas range often. I love my quartz backsplash: one lovely piece 30” wide by 27.5” long: easy to clean too....See MoreNeed advice on mismatched granite at seam
Comments (32)Interesting, it probably varies. I just think that these days everything can be and needs to be looked up. I recently bought a new phone, they're so expensive so I researched it for a couple hours. Or I just had a repair on my car, and I looked up everything about it before telling the dealership to go ahead (the price was competitive even though it was the dealership). I did my first kitchen reno in 2003, and at that time I looked up on what was called Gardenweb (pre-Houzz), and saw posts even then telling me to go to the template layout. Maybe you were on yourself @palimpsest way back. There was also another forum I visited all about tile and stone, and a man named Maurizio Bertoli was the absolute expert and highly respected in the industry (I understand he has passed away) and advised going to the template layout. So I asked the fabricator (again, this was 2003) if I could do that and his response was a big grin and "yes, I wish all my clients would come to the layout". So this is not a new thing that would be obscure so that no one would know about it. I reiterate that it is unfortunate that the onus has to be on the homeowner to be informed, but that is how it is about every kind of purchase these days....See MoreJoseph Corlett, LLC
