passions aside - surprisingly electric seems to trump gas
Comments (66)A lot of the absurd tirades here (mine included) could probably be avoided - if people actually took the time to comprehend what I wrote, especially my initial post. In my very first post I wrote "electric SEEMS to trump gas". Notice I did NOT write "this PROVES electric trumps gas". I carefully chose to use the word SEEMS, and avoided using the words PROVES, as I was looking for dicussion - not looking to start a "flame" war (hey - that's actually a pun - LOL). Many of the tirades here go on and on working themselves into a tizzy over the word "proven", and derivatives thereof, ranting and raving about how I have proven nothing, etc, when "proves" is an initial word of THEIR choosing, not MINE. Now I could choose to be nice to such posts, - but THAT WOULD BE PATRONIZING. I prefer to be condescending - it is far more honest response. The majority of posters have demonstrated their ability to read and comprehend, and have no problem seeing the value in this thread, and adding value of their own. Many of them do not agree with me on specific points - yet I do not attack them. They actually contribute points of discussion. When they say something constructive that seems to refute a point I have made - I welcome it - it adds real value to the thread. That is not being patronizing....See MoreCost of Extending Natural Gas Line to Deck
Comments (11)A few years ago I called the gas company about extending our natural gas service about 35 feet across the crawl space from the area where our fireplace, furnace and water heater are located to the kitchen. When they said over $2,000 I decided I didn't want a gas stove that much and forgot about the whole thing. But now I want to build a patio with a natural gas fire pit and grill, so I'm going to reinvestigate the gas line extension issue. I've gone to Home Depot and checked out gas pipes, materials and fittings. I could be wrong but this project shouldn't be any harder or more expensive than things I do all the time. I'm wondering if the gas industry people are pricing their work based on a fear that if we touch any gas related things we're going to blow ourselves up. This is crazy, and it has resulted in us placing a propane gas bomb right under our cooking surface, rather than obtaining our gas through a small line that supplies us with what we need in small measured amounts. If I can't find someone who will do what I want for a reasonable price I'm going to do this myself....See MoreNeed Advice on Pool Specs and Price
Comments (18)I don't know if you saw my response to your previous post, but we have almost exactly the same pool, size, equipment and pool cover that you have. The auto fill cost us $390, which included installation. Please double check the combination of an automatic pool cover with a salt water system. My pool builder highly advised against it because of corrosion problems. I called 2 pool cover companies and neither would warrant the pool cover with a salt system. I suggest you do a little research, as there have been reported problems. With the 10K cost of the pool cover you don't want to have problems 5 years from now from corrosion. I decided to not take the chance and nixed the salt system. :( We went with pre-cast stone coping in 24" x 16" x 3" with a bull nose finish. We love the way it looks. Keep in mind that the coping end with the pool cover will not be permanently grouted in case of the need to pull them up to for maintenance of the pool cover mechanics. The custom made brackets to hold the coping cost us $5K. Our pool builder prefabricated them in his shop. I have pictures of them if you'd like to see them let me know. We are looking to use a rope rolled in silcone and sand stuffed in between the coping pieces for a finished look. I think that it will look fine when its done. It's too cold out now to do it. The coping needs to stick out a minimum of 3" if you are going to have an undermounted track, which is what we have. It is a nice, clean installation and you really don't see the track much at all. We don't regret spending the extra $10k on the autocover & $5k for the custom brackets - we love it. We also love the in-floor cleaning system. There are several on these boards that say they are a waste of money. I disagree. Ours works great and I don't have any hoses or creepy crawly things running around and laying around the pool area. And the pool stays VERY clean. The costs of the Pentair Intellitouch i9 is high. We paid $2500 for the same model and that included a wireless remote as well as the indoor pad. We love it. Definately worth the money. And no, ours didn't include any decking. Price $80K. Amost apples to apples here. Also - small things not to forget: A drain in the pool cover vault. Ours ties into our storm drain. When planning your utility trenches plan for everything, electrical, gas, water, speaker wires, low voltage garden lighting and drainage. Once you cover it with your decking theres no going back to add something. Once you have a drawing of your plan - post it - you'll get lots of great feedback here. Good luck! Comments (11)Thanks so much for the "to do" list. I actually have a friend who is an architect, so that might help us out. It's a rowhouse, so it's not as though we can do any complicated curves or other designs on the structural walls. We want to do as much of the work ourselves as we can, but neither of us is willing to work with electricity. We're OK with plumbing, but given that the house was owner-rehabbed before and not done very well, I'd rather pay a professional to get it straight. We were hoping that we could move the tub into the house before the extension is built because we want a nice clawfoot, which will be impossible to get down the stairs. But all the interior design we can take care of. I'm an artist and have many plans for the interior....See MoreJoseph Corlett, LLC
