Old Payne 80% furnace question

I have and older Payne 80% furnace (PG8MAA036110). My blower motor is shot and my indoor coil is plugged with dirt. The blower was working until a local company came out abd looked at it. Now it just humms. Capacitor is good. They want $1500 to replace the motor and $1500 to replace the ”dirty” coil with no leaks or major rust. when the unit was working and it would come on in heat and the blower motor, not inducer would come on immeadiately. is that normal? And i may be no pro, but isnt $3000 a bit steep for these 2 repairs on a 2008 furnace? I would much rather get it fixed at this point until i can put enough away for a new system. The coil was easily accesible on this unit and its now clean (top and bottom) but $1500 for a new blower??

If you google "replacement blower" along with your make/model number you'll find a number of sources for HVAC replacement parts. That will provide some calibration with respect to the cost quoted.

@Ross. ive already done that and can see the motor cost under $250.And that l’s not a contractor price. Im just not familiar with mark ups and what not, but $1500 seems quite steep. And why would they quote me $3000 for both repairs on a furnace this old? Never even mentioned replacement. And im concerned even if I do get the blower repaired, is it suppose to come on immediately without the inducer even on or am i looking at more repairs? They didn’t address this either

You need to get involved with a quality dealer and forget the GC. Dealer needs to follow up on the matching R-22 evap coil from Frigidaire. It seems this is the way to go assuming you have no performance issues with the AC. Do you even know? Third party evap coils are available in the marketplace. I don't care for them but you already have a mismatched system of different brands. If for some reason existing Frigidare condenser can not be used, then I would go for a Bryant 13 SEER condenser with matching coil. You can't go with a 4 ton condenser because your blower motor on the furnace is only rated up to a 3 1/2 ton. As asked previously, you have good access to attic for moving the furnace? What size living space is your home? Dealer will need to extend or replace existing lineset most likely. That's the way to go. Drop the GC on the HVAC aspect of your home's modification. IMO

Thanks guys for the comments. I just want some professional advice before I make my final decision on the furnace. I know the best choice is a variable speed, 2-stage but nobody makes them in a 45K 80%, period. They are all 65-70K or bigger. Bryant makes a 2-stage 45K (312AAV) but it only has a bad old PSC motor. I could ask the installer about replacing the PSC motor in the 312 with a 'green' variable speed motor (www.evergreenmotor.com) as he gave me a brochure on it, but replacing a brand new motor doesn't sound very wise. The Bryant 313AAV has an ECM (X-13) motor but only a 1-stage 45K burner. I looked at the spec sheet on the Trane XV80 (somewhere on the net) and the smallest size I saw was 60K, no 45K model in the XV80. Did I miss something? I know probably the low stage (32K) of a 45K 2-stage burner would likely be sufficient 90+% of the time. The furnace usually runs Nov-Feb and perhaps a bit in March depending how could it gets. This past March it never ran at all. During April, May, Sept and most of Oct. i rarely use any heat and not much AC in Sept. The condo mgmt. sent out a notice last year that if our condenser units needed replacing, that we would have to replace our evap. coils at the same time (the coil would be at our expense-$400-$800, the condenser at theirs). I figured it was because the new condensers would all be R410 and the old R22 coils in current use would have to be replaced. the installer said he would replace my coil with a R22/R410 compatible unit so I will already be taken care of when the condenser finally fails. Yes, I thought on my own that the new coil might be too much of a strain for the old condenser. However, if I want the condenser replaced now I have to pay for it. As long as it is working they will not pay for a new one, even if I am getting a new furnace and coil.

I agree with Tiger. Payne is the Carrier's builder grade of equipment. You should not need a humidifier if you are tightening up the house to a point that you need an HRV. Concentrate on finding a good HVAC contractor on your own. The best equipment manufacturers are Carrier/Bryant, Trane/American Standard, and Rheem/Rudd.

Well the latest quote is in and it's the best so far. It's for two America Standard Freedom 95, two stage, variable speed furnaces. A 60k BTU system for the rental unit ( it gets a $600 rebate after installation) and a 100kBTU unit ($300 rebate) for the larger upstairs apartment. The quotes include everything; permits, thermostats, hard wired CO detectors, and removal of old oil tanks. 60k BTU cost $5500 100k BTU cost $5900 I will get $900 in rebates so the total cost for the install is $10500 I talked to the contractor as I believed that the units were oversized. The furnaces are purchased from the gas supplier and are the ones approved for rebates. He said a single stage 40k BTU unit will be fine for the rental apartment, but American Standard does not make a 40k BTU two stage unit and the 60k BTU unit will cost the same after the $600 rebate and it will be quieter, cheaper to run and will keep the tenants a bit more comfortable. I could get a 40k BTU Carrier Performance 96, there's a $300k rebate on that. He says an 80k BTU unit would be ok for the upstairs two floor apartment as far as heating goes, but from experience he feels that the larger fan capacity of the 100 kBTU unit is needed to get the air up from the basement to the top floor.

I don't think contractor price for the blower will be that much different from internet prices. Assuming no other parts are required a cost of $1,500 is a labor:parts cost ratio of 5:1 which seems steep to me. Another way to look at it is cost/man hour to complete the replacement. At a service billing rate of $150/hr. the replacement would be an all day job. Not likely. I'd look for a different contractor.

The comapny left me with no paper quote. i called and ask them if they could send me one. They accidentally sent me a quote from United Refrigeration which i googled and is a HVAC supply store nearby. The motor is listed at $107 and the capacitor $4.50. When I search on the site without an account the same parts come up at $242 and $27 respectively. Definately not going to trust this company.

I suggest you get another quote. Thete is no need to replace a coil because it is dirty.

They want to get several thousand $ out of you, one way or another. $3000 for a repair which makes no sense or $5000 for a new furnace.
