Calling All Passiflora Lovers!
Comments (3)Yup, Tommy, this gardening club is open to everybody - did you see the posting that Jim made a while back on the discussion forums about it's inception? That is the club we're in, with a number of both Gweebers and non-Gweebers. We'd love to have you - Eva has graciously offered to do Passifloras for us and someone else (you'll never guess who) is doing a presentation on birds and gardening, hopefully next month. Strangely enough, they made me president - just to warn you! >grin...See MoreFor all those peony newbies/1st timers out there
Comments (1)I know exactly how you feel. Even though I can see the bud in your pictures, I've had some like that and they simply have not matured into a full bloom. Maybe yours will, that would be nice as the variety you picked looks great. This is the 1st year my peonies are blooming and what I noticed this year that was different from previous...is that the buds that will bloom were much bigger at a younger stage in this year's life cycle...and as the buds matured they also shot up higher from the rest of the plants foliage...I don't know if thats the case for all peonies. Even if you don't have a bloom this year, you're at least off to a good start and should have some soon. Thanks for sharing....See MoreYour experience with the peony called Ludovica or Butch
Comments (3)Thanks for the info. After I posted this question here, I read somewhere that Ludovica doesn't take hot summer sun very well. That would tend to eliminate it in my southwest facing border. Butch sounds like a fine plant. Maifleur, your comments that "it has straight very masculine stems" and "it can be seen across the field" makes Butch sound like a very good choice. I find it SOOOOO hard to decide between plants. May Merrysunshine, a red fernleaf found at Hollingsworth, sounds like a fine plant for my perennial border and am strongly considering that one too. I haven't found any criticisms of it so far. I may resort to writing all the red peony names I like on small bits of paper, putting them in a hat, and blindfolded, reaching in and picking one! Sigh . . . Thanks for the input....See MoreCalling all gardeners!
Comments (24)I grow just about everything! About the only plants I don't have are ones that require a lot of shade. In my drought-tolerant perennials bed I have: crocosmia, red hot poker, jupiter's beard, russian sage, yucca, day lilies, Autumn Joy sedum, wild Oregon iris, columbine, heather, and a few others. In the cutting bed: dahlias, columbine, brown-eyed susan, asters, roses, tulips, a few daffodils, grape hyacinth along the edge, snapdragons, gazania, gladiola, baby's breath...several others. In the edible flowers bed: roses, borage, bee balm, nasturtiums, day lilies, violets, dianthus, calendula, marjoram, marigolds, tulips, sometimes sunflowers... In the herb garden: rosemary, sage, thyme, oregano, marjoram, chives, mint, basil, tarragon (sometimes), lemon verbena (once in a while), parsley... Vegetable garden changes all the time, but I usually grow tomatoes, peas, lettuce, kohlrabi, cucumbers, potatoes, corn, pumpkins, zucchini, beans, asparagus, radishes, squash. I've also grown canteloupe, watermelon, broccoli, swiss chard, and some others that I don't bother with any more. Also on our property: 2 crabapple trees, 7 apple trees, 3 pear trees, 1 plum tree, grape vines, blueberry bushes, raspberries, strawberries, quince, currants. And various other plants here and there: feather grass, blue fescue, yuccas, St. John's wort, periwinkle, lilacs, Japanese maples, rhodies, azaleas, snowcap, dusty miller, lithodora, too many other things to mention!!...See MoreMegan
