Identifying period of lighting fixture

Hi everyone. This lighting fixture came out of a 1930s home with old wiring that needed to be updated. I assumed it was original, but can anyone tell differently? It’s solid brass with a cherub carved in the stem. Thank you!

Geringer and Sons was around from c. 1913-15 or so until the late 1970s. How old is your house? Also I wonder if the escutcheon plate is not original to the fixture. It coordinates but it is not the same gilt finish as the fixture itself.

I fully agree with Palimpsest. The fixture itself has a 60s vibe. (Full disclosure - I had lamps with cherubs in the 60s - don't judge.) The escutcheon is of a different time.

Did they both stopped working at the same time? If so, your problem could be at the switch. Either the switch can fail, or you could have a loose connection. If they quit working randomly, it could be just that the bulbs burned out. They appear to be 12 volt halogen or something low voltage. Most of the time, if halogen, they will use either an MR-16 bulb or a G4 type bulb. Both are available as halogen or LED the latter with different colour temperatures available. They might have a shield that screws or clips over the bulb that needs to be removed before you can remove the bulb. I would try changing a bulb first, if that does not work do as wdccruise suggested. Good luck!

Wow I didn’t notice that at all about the plate. Thay is very possible! Once I clean it up I’ll take another pic and see if it still looks different (there’s a huge layer of dust covering it). So anyways this fixture is in a house that was built in the 1930s in San Francisco. Also blubird I’m definitely not judging lol! I love this fixture with the cherubs haha:)

It easily could be 1930s. Lots of traditional regency type fixtures were produced from when this company was started all the way through the 1970s. This easily could be original 1930s to the house. The candle sleeves tended to be the cheaper plain plastic cylinder later on, no matter the price or quality of the fixture overall.

Yeah I was thinking so that it could just be something people kept making throughout the midcentury. Idk if this helps but I took it to a person to get it rewired and he believes it’s a Spanish looking style. He really knows his stuff so it was hard for me to be like “nooo” lol. Thanks palimpsest :)

it might not be solid brass, it could be cast brass or plated so be careful what you clean it with.

Don’t worry the expert guy cleaned it and it’s look great. You guys are awesome thank you so much. I wonder why the owners changed the plate. Weird! RL relocation....your background is in lighting, is it not? Thank you for your expert opinion :)

The escutcheon plate has probably been made of a thinner piece of metal than the body of the fixture. I have several original lights in my home that was built in the 1930s. And the plates on some of them were made of a thin, almost bendable metal, gilded to match the actual fixture. I say the plate is original to the fixture. LOVE it!!!

plate is OG, pot metal was in full use remember this is depression era.

Don't clean too much. Maybe just a soft wash. I wouldn't polish it.

Interesting about the plate. The guy who rewired the light also said it wasn’t original. He could be wrong though of course. I’m just glad to hear the light seems overall original:) Also thanks don’t worry Beverly! The lighting guy cleaned it up for me and it looks great now. There was like a half inch of dust everywhere Lolol
