White kitchens with dark floors- I don't get it
Comments (53)Wood floors are like jeans. Some prefer a dark rinse, some prefer faded, and some like the regular medium blue denim. I love gray jeans, but they are harder to find. They all work and you don't have to match the color to anything. The very dark wood floors have been more popular the last five years or so. They aren't as warm as lighter floors, but they still look great. They aren't necessary for contrast if you already have white cabinets/black counters, but they are part of a look that many prefer. I chose a medium stain for the floors in my white kitchen with dark counters because they show less dust and look great with the area rug in my great room. The shade is similar to the floors I once had in a Victorian house built in 1895, and it is similar to the floors my friend has in her house built in the 50s. I consider it to be warm and neutral and I can't imagine ever tiring of it....See MoreKitchens That Don't Look Like a Kitchen
Comments (28)Muskokascp, Where have you been hiding the gorgeous kitchen! Did I miss your reveal? If so, can you include a link when you post the nighttime pics? I have some Hunter Douglas Silhouette's in the adjoining dinette. I would seriously consider moving them to our new kitchen windows and getting something a little more dressy for the dinette. We'll see. Rococogurl. Now don't laugh but in a pinch, I could put a pair of sunglass if need be if the sun got too much. Not sure what kind of shades you were referring to, I would anticipate them being very difficult to adjust because of the long walk around to the area. Sunglasses seem fun, crazy, but workable. Hello to Lavender Lass! I wish they were popular because it wouldn't have taken me 3 years of searching to find one to visit. I find on rare occasions one small window above the sink. Forget the one I'm looking for. I'm not sure why you consider it more modern. The first 2 pics I posted were traditional. The small appliance wall and base cabinets would determine the style of the overall kitchen. I was going to go modern, but now I'm softening the look. Who knows by the time I actually get this kitchen started. If there is one thing I don't think would EVER, EVER go out of style and that is windows. Since windows open the outdoors into your home, nature would have to go out of style and that isn't going to happen....See MoreThings that are trendy that we "hate"
Comments (152)Sheila, in a restaurant, those are called hightops and they started out as seating in the bar area. They are convenient to servers because there is no bending to serve at the table, and some restaurants like them because they take up slightly less room than a table of the same size. Why? because you sit on a stool, which is slightly smaller and your legs hang down slightly and take up a bit less room than with your feet flat on the floor, And in a restaurant, 12 tables instead of 10 can make a big difference. For home use they are an outgrowth of counter height seating at an island. It's kind of like having island seating but more flexible and smaller than an island so it may satisfy some people who don't have an island with seating. I don't find them particularly practical or useful in kitchens, but I have used them in gamerooms. In the kitchen I prefer to sit with my feet on the floor....See MoreDon't like my new countertops
Comments (19)Wow thank you so much everyone. These comments have been incredibly helpful. I really like painted kitchen cabinets, but I think based on this great feedback we will probably just replace the backsplash, and then paint. (This whole project started because I just wanted to paint the walls and trim, but then thought well we should replace the counter before we paint the walls, but then the countertop company said they couldn't easily replace the countertop without replacing all the tile too....) My husband called the countertop company this morning, and they say they will honor the original quote for counter/tile and come out a SECOND time and do the tear out and replacement of the tile - when they could have done the tear out of counter and tile all at once - so they are being very accommodating to my fickleness. Will definitely replace the light switch plate and pulls. I hadn't thought of that....See Morelloyd1014
