Help! Size of 3 kitchen pendants for 10ft island

Hi there! We need help with deciding which size kitchen pendant lights to get for a 10ft X 4ft island and 9ft ceilings. We have rough ins for 3 pendant lights. The pendants we like are the Hudson Valley Glendale Aged Brass Pendant Lights but we can’t decide between the 30" high x 16 1/4" wide x 16 1/4" deep vs. the 24 3/4" high x 12 1/4" wide x 12 1/4" deep.

Pendants need a minimum of 12” above to hang, or they aren’t pendants. More is better. Lighting placement is 30”-36” from the 36”H surface being lit. So, 66”-72” above the floor. 108” ceilings minus 72”, leaves 36”. Minus the 12” minimum open space above, means the *maximum* size that any pendants can be is 24”H. And you will need supplemental recessed lights to supplement the weird hot spots and shadows created by your lighting choice. They are a poor choice for a workroom with knives and boiling water.

Go with 3, unless the 24" pendants cast a very bright/wide light. Spaced correctly, I think 3 would look more balanced on an island spanning 10', with little liklihood of casting shadows. Try suspending cut up boxes over your island to better visualize 2 vs. 3 lights.

I agree with Ms. Colwell re: non paper shades in a kitchen. Too much potential for grease/dust meaning almost impossible to adequately clean. Glass or metal shades are better choices for kitchens that incur heavy cooking/baking.

@lucky998877 the picture makes it look a little weird, but the edge of it falls about 6.5-7" from the edge of the counter. The new ones would be about 5.5-6" smaller in diameter so they'd be a little closer in towards the middle. I think the "hole" (not sure the right term) where it attaches to the ceiling is about 15" from the edge of the counter.
