Hi,
We are in serious need of some interior design help.
We have an open concept living room and kitchen. The measurements for the living room is 18 feet x 11 feet. We feel that our current seating arrangement is a little awkward. My fiancé and I are wondering how you would arrange the seating and place the television. We will definitely be changing the couches and coffee table :)

I think the present furniture is a little over sized for your room - which you have stated will be replaced. You should be able to a sofa facing the TV and perhaps a chair each side of the fireplace.

TV seems to be in the right spot, but maybe a little high. ???

If it's comfortable for viewing, then it's ok.

Once you get your new sofa and chairs - then a rug.

In the meantime, try placing your furniture in an "L" shape - sofa facing tv.

Yes! Those sofas were hand me downs when I first moved in. We tried placing the sofa facing the tv but there isn’t enough space/clearance from the island to the back of the sofa. It doesn’t allow for easy flow. The tv as of right now is comfortable but we know this may also have to change. The tv is quite small at 42” and we’re upgrading to a 65” soon.

What are the big red scratch-outs? Furniture you aren't keeping? First step is the couch, second is the rug and third is the paint. Paint color should be based on fabrics and textiles (seating and rug) in the room. It can be custom blended, but the furniture is set in stone. When you shop for the rug, it should be 2-4 feet wider than the sofa. Slip it under the front 1/3 of the sofa and have it extend past the ends by 1-2 feet. You can use painter's tape on the floor to figure out the best size for your sofa and room. I'd replace the dining rug too, so the two are coordinated. In addition, push your TV credenza against the wall and put the TV on a swivel base to adjust for viewing.

Start by making the t v wall more important. Using the wall paint color, paint a wider (wider the better) console with it. Inspiration photo. Add some (real) greenery, put in a wicker plant stand to work with the accent color in the rug. Scout around for LED battery powered wall sconces in brushed brass. Move the rug and the sectional a bit more to the right so you have more of a path by the window to get in and out of the room. Good place for tripod floor lamp. You can make this off-side work if you center the new console on the wall, but install the t v more to the right of the wall so it aligns with the center of the sectional. This is where you hang the artwork. Keep the TV in the current configuration and location. Hang the TV on the flower table wall. Pull the sofa away from both walls by 6" or more if you can. Get a nice rug for under the whole sofa area. Curtains for the window. Figure out what you need for an entry area that can exist where the TV currently lives. Chair and console table? The little half table and some wall hooks?

Your real estate paperwork should have blueprints and measurements of all the rooms, no? Your furniture seems too big for the space you have. Ideally, you could float your sofa where the chairs are, float the chairs to face the sofa, and move the TV to left of fireplace. However, you don't really have a way to get through the living room. Any chance you could return the sofa for two more chairs? This is what's often advised in such small spaces. Paint the entire space a warm white that works with the floors. Get your blues and mustard in there with art work and rugs. You've already made a start. Jan offered a good suggestion to swap the middle space--current dining room--for living room. If you have an attractive eating space in the kitchen--do you?--then a beautiful round table or a long retangular table with casual but upholstered armchairs (less formal than these) could be very inviting as you walk in. Then no problem with walkways. Do a Google search for "switch living room and dining room." Lots of great photos as examples and how to do it. Here's a photo of a front door that opens into dining space. The chest and mirror by the door gives the sense of an entryway along with the hooks.

How deep is white cabinet under TV? It might need to go so coffee table can move towards TV. Have you tried couch facing TV but closer to end wall with windows & back to open dining table area? Move coffee table down to center on couch & loveseat moves down too Maybe the white cabinet can go either on stair wall, under window at stair end or back up against love seat. For replacement furniture, probably 2 chairs would work better than loveseat & put one on each side of TV. A side table & lamp would be needed for chair on the kitchen island end. When you have a bigger TV it will fill more of the wall it’s on. A taller & much narrower console piece could go under TV to ground it in place of the white piece. Figuring out the placement & traffic flow that works with your existing furniture will help you figure out the size of sofa & chairs that will work.
