Help with LITTLE LIME please? (pic) Zone8b PNW

Please tell me what I should do with my Little Lime? It's been in this container for the past year or so. Should I take it out of the pot or plant it in the ground? Not sure if it requires sun or shade or both. The branches are rather skinny so should I just leave them or prune them? Should I fertilize it? If this was yours, what would you do with it? lol - Thanks so much!

Any help would be be kindly appreciated.

Unless you want to keep growing it in a container, no reason not to plant it in the ground. Paniculatas are extremely hardy and do well here in the PNW. In our climate, they thrive in full sun but would appreciate a good soaking periodically during our dry summers. More shade will produce less flowering.

Since Little Lime blooms on new growth, you can prune as desired before May. Personally, I would only remove any very thin side branching and maybe any tall, leggy stems that appear out of proportion (I don't see any in the photo). This cultivar is bred to be compact.

If planting in the ground with any decent soil, no fertilizing should be required although, mulching annually with compost never goes amiss :-)

If you DO want to keep this in container, come back for further suggestions. Container growing has very different challenges than do inground plantings.

but here is my thought process ... i found the real name ... and looked up images ... such as here:

and then seeing that though dwarf.. it still can be a 3 or 4 foot plant ... or larger ....

i would free it to mother earth ...

unless .... the goal of the process is to learn about growing shrubs in pots ... with all it attendant repotting and root pruning probably every year.. if you figure out how to grow it well ...

too many peeps see that a plant is a dwarf.. and think its going to remain a small plant ... all dwarf means is that it has a reduced annual growth rate.. as compared to its monster cousins ... but.. over the years.. even at the slower rate.. it can get to be a large plant ... and most large plants need a large root mass to flourish .. and therein lies the limitation of a pot ...

Not sure it this is good or bad news...but mine is growing fast. I was given what was told me, a Rose of Sharon also called Hibiscus that was trained (purned) into a tree. Was not nursery breed or bought this way. Have had it (started out much smaller like a tall twig) for about 7 yrs and it always comes to life about now. It's just now sprouting tiny leaves. Got no idea what kind it is. Has 3 to 4" blooms, sorta deep pink. Don't have pic of blooms....sorry. But here's a couple pics I just took so you can see form of plant and current growth. It was dark, so pics aren't great. I'm in 7B, in VA on coastline of Chesapeake Bay (near Va Beach/Williamsburg if that helps). Had unseasonably warm winter and now a cold snap coming thru.

You are fine. No chance of having bloomage problems for next year, cadence. Their blooms develop on new wood so that means the 2015 blooms develop in the Spring of 2015. It would be best to prune in winter when the plant has gone dormant as opposed to say in the middle of the summer with 100-degreeF 37-degreeC temperatures. But, sometimes these accidents happen suddenly and you have to play the hand that you were dealt regardless of the current weather conditions. Hopefully, temps have gone down for you. Enjoy those two shrubs. They are good choices. My LL still has green blooms. Once your shrubs get older and the stems get stronger, you should not see "too much" of this problem. Say 5 years or so? By the way, if you ever see heavy blooms and the threat of coming heavy winds, feel free to be proactive and cut selected blooms to prevent this problem again. Or add a wind break of some type. Luis

Yuan, with all due respect, I would disagree that this is wasting time. Reason is because the strains grown in America seem to have mediocre aroma. Immigrant Southeast Asian cooks may note that they don't have the same oomph to them as the ones from their homeland. So while the ones propagated by wholesale citrus growers will readily fruit, the leaves are not as aromatic as can be. Often, Southeast Asian immigrants will grow out many seeds and select the plants with the best scented leaves to use. Experience from my mother. She and her friends agreed that the ones bought from the retail nursery tend to have a very fruity scent. The ones that they preferred has a slightly earthy profile, I would say like curry leaves and usually were shared as seedlings within the community.

Gardengal, thank you so much. I haven't decided whether to keep it in a container or plant it in the ground. I'm leaning more toward planting in the ground. I always appreciate your suggestions simply because they always work for me.

Ken, thanks for your valuable input. I had absolutely no idea that there were different names for Little Lime Hydrangeas. I still have my tag from 2 or 3 years ago. I always save my tags...

Just checked and found my tag. You are correct Ken, it's called 'Jane' - Dwarf form of Lime Light. I also have Lime Light. It's beautiful 8' tall but flops over when it rains. I was thinking of trying to remove some of the branches and turn it into a tree to use as a focal point in my garden. Of course, I'd have to learn how that is done. lol
