I too am interested in grafting a "friendship" tree. I understand citrus overload, I was absent from this thread for a while because the bugs, leaf drop, etc. made me rethink how easy it is to grow citrus in pots up here. Now that it is under control and my citrus collection has been parred down to include only what I like, I am selective in my citrus choices. To that end I want to graft over my Cocktail grapefruit, I have harvested 4 this month and the flavour is not good. I am assuming it is the soil, light, and temperature conditions, but, there is no point in growing what doesn't do well. I looked at the compatibility chart jonmerr posted, my question is, it shows that grapefruit is compatible with mandarine as a rootstock, can mandarine be compatible as a graft on my grapefruit. Or am I tilting at windmills?

Bob I think that most people get to many varieties and burn out on the associate problems and end up quitting. I know of several past people who lost power to their green house and lost 30 to 40 trees. They looked for more trees with advice from us and then left. These trees are expensive. If I decide to quit citrus I will let you all know and why. When I first started I posted a lot with picture and a lot of other people got mad and they let me know in very rude ways. I am still here and Better than 15 of them are gone. It is too bad because they were a real asset to the group Jay We eat them like an orange or mandarin. Gave away 1 each to 4 closest friends. Dave Grafting is hard too. I use clean sterile thumb nails to lift bark instead of a knife I can't control and I make the cuts with a serrated steak knife I just push in for the horizontal and I saw with same to make the vertical. My failure rate is less than 50% instead of tool using 97% failure. This years grafts that are doing well. Valentine pomelo on sour orange Rootstock trunk tall enough to stop handle from hitting graft. Poncirus trifoliata on Seville sour PT/Seville graft date. Mature NZL grafted to seedling NZL. Steve

Thanks Tom. This is a new graft using a bud from the tree you sent to me some years ago. That caterpillar could slice through the new shoots trunk. The mother Valentine Pomelo after 3 years outside in ground just over 6 feet tall and just under 6 feet wide lightly branched Steve
