I need to know what the reason is for making the stairs different than what they are ? A bit more info would be helpful

The current stairs are too steep and shallow treads…we are redoing all the boards to composite as this is a flooding area. The door center is about 2 feet off from the roof peak.

They do not appear to be steep , I agree the materila probably needs changing and what is the depth of the treads ? As for where to put the stairs IMO lined up with the door is best I like a wide stair case for entry but thes could be a bit narrower as long as the line up with the door equally on both sides.

Ignore the roof peak for purposes of the stairs. Align with the door.

The current treads are only 9.5” and we are expanding them to full 12” tread as there are large feet using the steps. Thanks for the thoughts on placement.

i would center the new steps on the peak. Move them in about a foot to 18 inches on each side.

I would leave them the width they are so you don't have to mess with adding more trim below. But if you must make them narrower, I agree with Houssaon.

Wait a minute! Which roof peak are we talking about?? I assumed you were talking about the peak at the very tippytop of the house!

If you were talking about the peak above the PORCH, I might want to change my answer.

I am talking about the lower porch roof peak.

I like what Houssaon shows and that way the new front rail is equal distances from the columns. We just won’t see the door centered as we look up the steps.

You could go either way, but the purpose of the stairs are to lead to the door IMO, hence the steps should align with the door. I would make stairway narrower so if door is 36" for example consider stairway of 60" centered to door. This would give more space for pillars to show more prominently there too without the railing blocking pillar. Then you can landscape nicer on each side of stairway.

The stairs lead to a lovely sitting porch from which the interior of the house is accessed by a front door. The porch peak indicates the entrance to the porch, hence the stairs to the porch should center on the peak. I think the charm of the house and era is lost if the porch loses its eminence as the “front room”. Focus on the porch space itself — yours looks to be wonderful.

Definitely centered on the peak will be the most aesthetically pleasing. I agree that the purpose is to lead to the great full length front porch, which contains the front door. I love the mock up @houssaon did.

I think your home is beautiful just the way it is! I do see the need for wider treads so understand the steps need to be redone.
