Okay to put potted (new) peony on front porch?
Comments (4)Well, everything I've read has said to not plant peonies in summer, but wait 'till fall. Hence my hesitation. The pot is a pretty decent size (it used up about half my bag of soil to fill!). I guess I'm just not sure where to put it, period, since it can't be perfectly happy in the basement, large windows or not. Can I put it out on the back porch (morning sun) and cover it if the weather gets too cold or there's a frost?...See MoreWhere would I put new stairs for attic?
Comments (12)Joslin, I think your assumption that the stairs have to end at the dormer is the flaw here. We have a back staircase that goes to an attic space that has no dormer - it's a small Victorian with a peaked roof. The stairs enter the attic from the side, so if you looked at it in cross section, the stairs and the roof are parallel. THat is why you can go up them without hitting your head at any point. The stairs emerge into the attic about 3 feet in from the shoulder wall. It will take me some time to do a sketch and or some photos, but I'll work on that. The tall part of the staircase is right along the outside wall. When you would hit your head, the stairs turn toward the centre of the house and emerge in the taller part of the attic. Hope that helps to break the logjam a little till I get some photos. Karin L...See MoreWhere do I put the stairs??
Comments (10)I’m sorry, didn’t realize from your post that these two areas are possible. I love stairs by the entry. I am in a downsize home now and my stairs are across from my front door, but going down into lower level. I still made staircase important by hanging a fab chandelier in the stair well. I am going to add a photo of my front hall from our last house, where stairs led up to a loft… I don’t know why, but I find a visible staircase so welcoming....See MoreWhere to put stairs on too low front porch
Comments (15)Calling the front porch design “poor” is nicer than anything I’ve ever said about it! :) I’m painting the house this year and will replace the few areas of bad siding. My thought was to paint the porch overhang and columns the house body color to make it less of a feature. if the steps are on the left side of the porch, there’s less than 3ft between the step and the house so nothing can be planted there. You also look right at my hose spigot that doesn’t have another practical location. The area boxed in in red is where the pavement needs work, I’m not planning on repaving the entire driveway. I don’t need the driveway wider because we usually park in front of the garage. If I leave the stairs in the front, I was going to replace the blue box with pavers, then leave the rest for some plants....See MoreHU-989255385
