IMO open shelving is never a good choice in a kitchen and for sure not on a range wall unless you love cleaning all the stuff on the shelves very often. No matter how well the hood works steam and some grease always escape What is the plan for the shelves ? I would do some horizontal cabinets there instead

In our house, we call floating shelves “cat perches.”

assume this is display. too high for daily reaching and use of high turnover items...which is the best way w shelves that are for practical use. what is the goal? this doesn't need to be vetoed but how about a cabinet and a shelf below on either side....14 in up from counter for small plates/bowls etc things that get used so "dusting off" cant be a complaint. Your plan needs adjustments .

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I think we are too far down this path to make drastic changes. The cabinets are installed and it will take another few months to order additional top cabinets. If I hate the shelves after 6 months, I can order cabinets then and taker the shelves down :) I already have the brackets and wood for the shelves.

All of you make good points that I should've considered earlier. For now, I wondering if I am going to have floating shelves:

1. how high should they be? I'm thinking similar heights as top cabinet shelves. 15"-18" from the countertop for the first shelf and another 10" up for the second?

2. how wide? fridge to stove is 36". So 30" centered over the bottom cabinets? longer?

butt next to fridge. no need for a gap there. end it 4-6 inches from side of range . 30 to 32 in wide shelf....next to fridge on left. question of depth. sometimes a 9-10 in depth is preferable. 12 in is okay too. install 14 to 16 inches up from counter esp if reduced depth. next shelf up can be at about 10 inches up from first. these will be using shelves hopefully ..... thats why the depth and height is geared in such a way. If you opt for reduced depth the right side need not be cut back so much in width...were you worried about doorway and the end so close? clear the door trim by a few inches...a foot is not necessary but whatever you feel comfortable doing ...safety and so on is important.

Plan your backsplash before deciding on the shelves...do you want the whole wall, do the tiles stop at the shelves...what about the empty space between a shelf and the hood etc.

I love open shelves but will never again have them close to our range.

With that said, since it sounds like you are currently devoted to open shelves I would hang them 18" from countertop and then 12" to the next shelf. I would make the shelves 30" wide and align them to the outside (left and right) of cabinets.

I would never put shelves beside a range….even with a good vent. Things will get dirty. Closed storage is more important and useful.

My kitchen came with the house last spring...I had no say in the finishes. I didn't think I would like the shelves, and I definitely would have preferred cabinets. As it turns out, I like being able to see and enjoy my favorite pottery. [It helps that I don't cook often any more. 😉]

We have shelves at our lake cabin and are very happy. I seldom fry food, so have no issues with grease. We use the items on our shelves making ”dust” a non-issue.

Check your range requirements for clearances to combustibles. You may not be able to place anything within 6" to either side to a height of 18" (this is dependent on the range but the clearances will be in your manual).

Think about what you want to put on them and make sure whatever it is can go in the DW. Even stuff INSIDE cabinets next to my range in my last house got a nice film of oil on them since my hood was mostly good for making noise and not good for much else.

Will you be prepping on either side of the stove? I wouldn't want anything in front of my face.

If it is your prep space it is the perfect place for magnetic knife strips.

Pot racks would also do nicely there. There are some low-profile ones that are only a few inches off the wall.

But my real vote is for cabinets or nothing (+ knife racks).

Thanks everyone. The grease warning is ery much appreciated. The current plan is to put everyday use things - plates, bowls, glasses, etc. on there - which makes it both better and worse. Theyll be dishwashed often so that's good, but they will get greasy which is bad. We'll learn as we go :)

Thanks for the tips on the height and the alignment. Aligning it on the opposite side of the stove and coming 6 inches short would make grease at least a little bit better. Maybe I should build a retractable cover for them (aka a cabinet) that comes on when the stove is on :)

All the way across..as far as you can match the lowers. I had a similar kitchen in my last house and plan to do it again. I cook a lot and it wasn’t bad at all. We had the everyday dishes and glasses on them, too. I wiped down shelves before unloading the dishwasher. I have upper cabinets right now and miss my open shelves. Can’t wait to remodel.

With the extra 6" gap and dishes you will use and dishwash often, hopefully, grease won't be as big of an issue. When we had our open shelves we had spices and containers that lived on the shelf permanently, making the grease factor troublesome. We also did not have a strong venting system, which it looks like you will.
