Those are definitely pink. If he didn't use the right kind of primer then there will be bleed through. I've always had the best success with a few coats shallac based primer to stop bleed through. He doesn't see it because he doesn't want to fix it.

Did you approve a sample of his color matching attempts before he put that color on everything?

You should of had a sample and he should too. That would then allow you to confirm that all colors match between samples and what was delivered.

What jumped out to me more was that you paired a more modern looking tile design/color with very traditional fireplace and built-ins, which don't seem to match your kitchen island design.

All the colors do match the flower painting!

Definitely looks pink on my monitor. To the right of the FP, the upper back looks pink and the lower looks more neutral as does the drawer front. Not sure of the look you were going for but it appears very splotchy.

There are all kinds of "painting contractors" with varying levels of skill and experience. I would have discussed sanding off the finish and bleaching the wood. All primer is not created equal and four coats of the wrong stuff will not prevent bleed through. When you look into preventing bleed through, shellac or oil based are stated as necessary. We used two coats of BIN synthetic shellac primer over previously painted 40 year old pine trim and three months later knots bled through the two top coats of paint.

Any ideas on correcting this?

2 coats of shellac based primer, not synthetic because it doesn't work like real shellac. Oil based can work also, but I don't like dealing with it so I usually stick to shellac. Then repaint an area that is somewhat inconspicuous and see what it looks like. And hire a different painter.

And now this is happening… It’s been two weeks since the paint job. Does this confirm it’s a primer problem?

Wow, that looks awful! I'm so sorry this is happening to you. How frustrating to pay money to a professional and have this result. It sure looks like something was used that was not compatible. Did he say what all the products he used were? Maybe he didn't rinse off a cleaning agent before painting, or he didn't clean it at all. I haven't painted over gel stain before so I'm not sure what needs to be done before painting it. Maybe Google the process and see if it matches the things and steps he used.

Did he sand everything to dull the finish before painting? It almost looks like a problem of trying to paint over a too glossy surface.

At one point, one if his workers showed me that the sanding was taking the shape of the trim down so I agreed to not do that. I didn’t know I was consenting to no sanding.

I think you need to speak to the painter and see what all of the steps and products were that they used. Hopefully he will be truthful so you can find a solution to this.

This is most likely a prep-paint problem but check your lighting. Get all LED 3500 min bulbs and see if it changes anything. Lighting does funny things. I hope you withheld some payments to encourage him to fix this if it is a painter problem. If not, find a new true pro painter and get it done right. Hard lesson for sure. Good luck.
