You need a fireproof wall behind where I live and you will need to check code where you are .You have tile floor so that is okay but behind there needs some kind of fireproof material IMO.

I'm not so very fond of the vertical slate strip behind the stove. Am thinking whatever treatment you use that it should span from wall to wall. Not sure if that should be paint, stone, brick veneer, etc. Sorry, if I am being too critical but am not a fan of the tile in your room. Am thinking your room would be much cozier with wood flooring and perhaps just a slate or stone hearth. It looks like new gypsum board has been installed behind the stove. Hopefully it is type "X" fire rated. That should solve any concerns with the wall catching fire although it would be a good idea to call your local building official to see if there are code issues. I don’t like the tile either, it’s dated and unfortunately, budget won’t allow for a change right now, if ever. I will need to live with it. Any pics of ideas would be much appreciated if possible

Try google "wood stove feature wall site:houzz.com" for a lot of images. It looks like the most common feature wall is brick. If you prefer not to use brick, you could use a white tile that coordinates with your choice of paint. It's a lot easier to pick the tile first and the paint to match than the other way around. Other options are to use a ledger stone in colors that coordinate with the tile flooring or to pick a different tile that coordinates with your floor tile. Use a different size and shape than the floor tile.

Btw, the board behind is simply temporary until we start to work on repainting in the spring

I really like your inspiration pic with the slate. It makes the dark stove pipe less obvious. And if you do the hearth the same, it will look great. With the floor remaining light (if you plan that) I would look at a wall treatment closer to the color of the hearth.

Where I live you don't need a fireproof wall behind the stove as long as you meet minimum clearances to combustibles as per the stove installation instructions. There's also heat shields which can reduce those clearances. The back wall behind my stove doesn't even get the slightest bit warm.

Do you want the stove to disappear? By using the black tile it makes the stove disappear. i wanted our stove to be a feature so prefer some contrast.

Here's what we did for our wood stove.

Room looks way too small to have the tv and seating so close to the wood stove. You’ll roast when it’s on.
