Need ideas for updating the stone exterior of my home
Comments (5)If your house was built with quality in 1984, I would strongly urge you to wait before "updating" it. I moved into an old stone carriage house that had been converted to a residence by an architect back in 1970. My first thought then - like yours - was to bring it up to date (after realizing that there was nothing left of the original interior to restore.) But time caught up to me, and I came to appreciate the aesthetic and functionality of much of what he did. What I grew tired of was the contribution of the owner who succeeded him, who embellished the bold but simple lines of the 1970s with retro flourishes. Functionally, whenever there is a problem with the way the house works, I go back to the original 1970 concept and plan and usually find the logic. The later improvements, not so much. A recent article in the NY Times about staging houses was instructive. The successful stagers replaced all the period elements (not just furniture but light fixtures, moldings!) and with 1970s style knockoffs! So what I'm saying is, hold on -- the 80s look is not far behind! Don't do something so permanent as destroying a massive stone fireplace or facade without taking a long deep breath. My experience is that keeping the integrity - aesthetic and function - of a house is almost always the best. Unless of course you can afford to completely, totally re-do it. But that is not cosmetic "updating." My two cents....See MoreModernize my house exterior, need ideas!
Comments (5)A bare stretch of lawn does not say newer. I would look at planting some trees, not too close to the house, to frame the view. Some color near the house, say some rose bushes, easy ones like floribundas, in soft and compatible colors, like pink and white or cream, would make the house look more lively and attractive. Those two pots flanking the garage should have something taller in them to soften the stone facade. In fact, the pots should probably be larger and a contrasting color for a little pizzazz....See MoreNeed help with exterior color! Please give some ideas : )
Comments (2)You really shouldn’t post the same question twice. It is counter productive. I brought you out of the “unanswered” when I replied to your other post. Stick with that one and delete this. http://ths.gardenweb.com/discussions/4876532/struggling-for-weeks-on-exterior-paint-color-please-help...See MoreNeed some SERIOUS help with my exterior... disaster.
Comments (56)Like the idea of some third party coming over and pointing out some deficiencies and then just "ask what s/he meant by that" and that s/he was fairly adamant that these subs were not doing your build justice. By focusing on the subs, you can give MIL an out. How active is she at the site? Is it possible that she's simply not seen this? or is this a new crew from her usual folks, etc? Is your bank giving you draws? is their inspector someone that you can work with? or your banker? I have a good relationship with the inspector that is working for my bank. If he holds up a draw because the work isn't done (or is done VERY WRONG) things will get real and you'll HAVE TO address them - or else no one gets any money. That might be the most direct way. You have to address these - if you don't - even for the sake of "family peace" - it will rot your relationship like the water intrusion will rot your house....See MoreDevin M
