Help with decorating big blank wall space?

Any ideas for decorating these two large spaces next to our fireplace? we will have a big wood mantle on the fireplace soon as well.

In a perfect word I’d love to find beatiful pieces of art to display there but i dont have thousands to spend. I also dont want cheap tacky pieces either.

should they be decorated fairly semetrical as far as size and shape?

Love the cabinets. Yes I would put similarly sized pieces over the cabinets. Look at sites like minted.com for reasonably priced art

Is the TV a bit high?

TV above the left cabinet, art above the mantel, shelves above the right one.

Gah, help me understand what I'm seeing. There's a wall mount tv near a fireplace with a tile surround/mantle (the top picture), and there's another wall mount tv near another fireplace that looks like plain drywall (the bottom picture). Are those two areas in the same room? How are they oriented to each other? Initially I'm agreeing with crn247. I would put something with height like a plant or large floor lamp at the rear corner of the sectional (where it meets the wall) and use that as a visual stop for that area. Then decorate before that as one space, and after it (desk area) as another space -- but making sure that the two areas compliment each other. Is that mirror (or thing that looks like a mirror) to the right of the tv in the bottom picture something that's built in, or something that moves? What is it? (e.g. is it a mirror you had hoped to hang...?)

Looking at it from every angle, the clock does look lonely there, and I really don't think paintings are the ideal solution. You need a lower piece of furniture to tie the clock to something solid, and a narrow table is the best idea. Perhaps you can put some of the items from that high shelf, which right now diverts the eye from your living spaces, on the table. I also agree that the three pictures lined up on the stairs don't look right. Since you like them there I would suggest that you hang them much lower, at people height.

Is this a teen bedroom or an adult bedroom? I notice some stuffed animals in the corner. If this is a teen room, I would get some large sunflower decals from Etsy or a craft store. If it is an adult room, I would get some large framed art for either side of the bureau. No sunflower art as it can be easy to overdo a theme in an adult room.

Be creative and use things that are meaningful to you. Unique collections aren't acquired overnight. Start small and collect art/items as you gradually find things you really like. Buy it because it "speaks to you" and not because it matches the upholstery.

Art, yes. Try local art shows and exhibits. I've got a lot of art on the wall, either orinpginsl or numbered prints, and most pieces have been a few hundred, not thousands, of dollars.

Meg - I only decorate with pieces that mean something to me. I often use photos I’ve taken from some place special and have them enlarged and framed for the space. One of my favorite all time cheap pix is of the “Imagine” mosaic piece made for John Lennon at Strawberry Fields in Central Park. I get so many compliments for a $12 photo and $20 frame with a museum mat.

Do you sit right in front of the fireplace? If not, I'd move the tv to one of the sides. That'd let the fireplace be the centerpiece of the room.

Also disregard the TV size chart above. It is for if you want a theatre type experience.
