Other Design Dilemma Exterior

Looking for the specific name for roofline and style of this house

I know this is a shingle style bungalow built in the 1930-40s but am looking for a more specific description or term for this style, (and/or any other identifying information), that would help me find historic pictures of similar houses for exterior paint colors. Thank you in advance!

The first photo shows the house with a den which was added to the left side during the 1970s. Photo 2 shows the original side porch roof before the den was added. Photo 3 shows what the house looked like originally.

What city and neighborhood is this located in? Sometimes it is helpful to narrow a housing type down to the geography. Are there other homes like this in the neighborhood?

You are right. I have seen that done and it's helpful.

The house is loated in MIlford Delaware. It iis off the main street entering the town but not sure of the "district". It is in what I would call the old hospital neighborhood. Milford is quite small.

It is the only one I have seen there so far, though there are other bungalows and Sears kit homes nearby. I looked over a listing of Sears homes and it does not appear to be one of those.

It was built between 1930-40.

klabio A farmhouse is not really an architectural house style but what gives this house a farmhouse quality is the metal roofed wrap-around porch. Without the porch, it could be a Georgian inspired center-gable Colonial Revival except it is 1 1/2 stories instead of 2. A full width front porch would have been more likely on a hipped-roof Colonial Revival. Drop the center gable and dormers and it could be a Greek Revival. Drop the classical detailing and it could be a Southern Tidewater house. All of these styles could be farmhouses.

I love arts & crafts and mission styles too so I was drawn right into this post. Since you have a budget and say you won't (ever?) have more money to put into the decor I think you need to sit down and think about how to spend the money. Which things do you expect to last "forever" and which can you see replacing down the road? Put the bulk of your money into the forever stuff. I think as long as you keep things simple you can mix art & crafts/mission with other styles with great success. Puffy recliners are no good though so get rid of that thing! Just kidding. Sort of ;-) We'd all like to a houseful of Stickley and Van Erp but most of us can't afford that. There are "no name" antique mission furnishings out there at reasonable prices (because they are no name) that are solidly built. Someone like my father, who hated mission furniture, would use them as work benches or whatever. Now they need refinishing but they're still good pieces. Keep your eyes open for those diamonds in the rough.

Can they do a corner seam? While some people prefer a short seam at the sink, I like the look of continuous stone on my sink rail, where I spend most of my time. My sink is on one leg of the U and the seam is 4" from the corner on the bottom of the U. I don't really care that there's a long corner seam, mainly because I have a great seam and have to look hard for it. Oldryder explained that sink seams are not the preferred placement, but fabricators seam there to CTA as the sink rail is a weak point during transportation. So it's good for getting it in your home, not ideal for use and appearance for the next 15 years. One disadvantage of the sink seam is that they are unable to use the electronic device that pulls two slabs together and creates a very tight seam. So you might have a wider seam right in front of you at the sink. Some people have had horrible pattern matches on sink rails too. It may be that your granite has to be seamed there, but I'd question whether it's just the transportation issue. They can transport it using steel reinforcement bars under the granite. Make sure you see and approve the layout of your slabs before they cut them!

OP - I think you're underestimating what a 1600 sq ft house can actually accommodate. It's not a miniature house: 40 years ago, it would have been a perfectly standard size for a family of four in America, and it would be considered a normal or even largish house in most of Europe today. So, to my mind, looking at pool houses or guest houses is not the way to go - perhaps you should look at European sources for your inspiration instead. Our previous home was 1800 sq ft, in which we had three bedrooms (one used as a study), 2 full bathrooms and a powder room, an open kitchen/living/dining area, and a big deck. I see no reason why, with good design, you couldn't have a comfortable two or three bedroom house with normal room sizes in a 1600 sq ft home.

Cedar shake cladding does not qualify it to the architectural "Shingle" style. And you do not want to paint cedar. You have a cottage.

Thanks for these helpful answers, all. I'm glad to learn that the house is not shingle, but cottage style, 3onthetree and that the roof line is Cape Cod, sushipup2. (Our current home is a symmetrical cape with 2 dormers. I didn't put the two roof styles together.)

Finally, the siding is composite, though very sturdy composite, so is paintable. Love the color swatches you sent, Maureen!
