Do you use your prep sink or main/clean up sink more?
Comments (10)Our kitchen isn't done yet, but I can tell what I think will be the sink usage: I will use the prep sink probably 75% - 85% of the time My DH will use the cleanup/main sink 75% - 85% of the time...I cook, he cleans up (kids are usually doing homework b/c of our crazy schedule!) I have to admit though, that neither sink will face the wall...the main sink is in front of a window to the backyard; the prep sink is in the corner of the peninsula facing the DR. In our old kitchen, the only sink faced a wall and we didn't really have a problem with it. As with Lascatx, when I'm prepping I'm watching what I'm doing rather closely since it usually involves knives or peelers. My DH, OTOH, watches TV while he does dishes. The main reason we put the sink where it is is that I loved Fothia's bay window sink and wanted to do the same in my kitchen. The other reason is that I wanted a "real" vent over my cooktop but not in the window and (1) there wasn't enough room on either side of the window to give me decent work space on both sides if I put it on either side of the window, (2) I like the more balanced/symmetrical look of the cooktop centered on the wall, and (3) there wasn't enough counter room for both on the back wall (it's what I had before and hated it!)...See MoreIf you have a white farm sink, what did you use as prep sink?
Comments (10)Unfortunately, a Shaw's isn't in our budget for our new kitchen (in our new house) to be built next year. But we do have an Ikea not too far away, so the main clean-up sink is the Domsjo double-bowl apron-front sink, and the prep sink on the island will be the Domsjo single-bowl apron-front sink. Not a very helpful answer, I'm afraid! And yes, I do prefer a double-bowl sink for my washing up : ). I was so nervous (or paranoid, I suppose) that Ikea would discontinue the sinks (which I've heard can be hard to find anyway in some cities), that we bought them last month, even though we aren't starting construction until next spring... But I don't think they need to be matching, unless that's what you like. I have wanted a Belfast sink for the past 25 years, since graduating from university, so nothing besides budget was going to change my mind! Comments (10)I love my prep sink--and many thanks to the folks here who 'talked me into it' when I hesitated!! I use mine for all prep work--washing veggies, rinsing meat or poultry, washing poultry hands or messy baking hands, and occasionally for washing a dish when the other sink is busy/full. I also use it to drain pasta or other things that have been cooking, or to draw water for cooking them. Most of the things on Rhome's list are also on mine. I like that it's on a corner across from the dishwasher, so if I have prep dishes in there, I can just snatch them up and pop them in the DW. It's also accessible from two sides since it is on the corner. I don't have a garbage disposal on the prep sink, but I do have pop out garbage can under the sink, so I can just toss veggie trimmings or whatever in there. I also have a Tapmaster on that sink, and I highly recommend it--it's great when you have chicken-y or greasy/dough caked hands to be able to turn the water on and off without having to touch anything! My prep sink is big enough to handle a big turkey, wash a cookie sheet, and do whatever the main sink does if I need it to, which is just how I wanted it. I did make a strict rule that dirty dishes do NOT get left in the prep sink by anyone not actually prepping food--that means that it's always clean and ready to go when I need to use it. :-) Hope this helps. Comments (7)Thanks for the feedback. Here is an early drawing of the new kitchen layout (I'm waiting for a revised set): You'll see that the island measures 66" long, but, due to the angled corners, I calculate that the work area is about 42" long. I asked our KD/GC to increase both the length of the wall with the cooktop and the island by 9" and add a prep sink, so I think the work area will be 51" long. My idea is to have the prep sink towards the end of the island across from the rangetop. That would make it easy to dump pots of hot water there. The colander we normally use is about 13" across, although we occasionally use a bigger one. Put another way, how much space is recommended for a prep area and how far from the edge can a sink be placed? Our current prep/everything space is 27" long and there are times when it would be nice to have more space. If we keep 30" as a work area and place the sink a few inches from the end, that would leave us enough room for a 16-18" sink. Would that be big enough for typical prep cleaning and dumping pots of water from the cooktop?...See More- 2 years ago
