Are you buying anything for yourself this holiday season?

I used to take advantage of post-Christmas sales to get something I've been wanting, but more recently I've found great bargains in pre-Christmas sales. This year, Black Friday lasted about three weeks. :-)

Yesterday I ordered a new TV. I was on the fence about it for awhile because there's really nothing wrong with my present TV. It's not "smart," but I use a Fire Stick. However, now that my grandsons (8 and 10) come over a lot, and the holiday movie season is upon us, I thought it would be fun to get something a little bigger with the dazzling resolution offered by current models. Now I'm excited!

How about you? Are you treating yourself to anything special?

We don't do gifts, except for small children. But my husband was recently complaining that his small (old and cheap) chef's knife did not hold a good sharp edge, so we're going to Sur La Table next week to buy him whatever he likes. And it's an excuse to have lunch at Legal seafood at King of Prussia Mall. That is as close to shopping as I'll get all season, god willing.

I bought myself a new schoolhouse style clock for livingroom last night, online from Kohls. I had one I got years ago at a thrift store. It wasn't in good shape and I have worked on it and fixed a couple times. It's not keeping time again and I just don't feel like messing with it.

Wait a minute. A truck crashed into your house? Did I miss this story? My MIL once was having lunch in Georgetown and a car crashed through the window of the restaurant. The waiters had to get her to move to another table, I think she would have sat there eating her salad while the radiator of the car was releasing its steam. :) I also want to say thank you to everybody for all the help and hand holding you are providing me with lately. Wishing you Joy during this Holiday Season. Bee

What gift would you like to pass along this holiday season?

    Q

I'd like to give a shot of common sense to everyone. To the ones who have to stay in the lane to try to get just one more car length before cutting over and making everyone panic stop. The ones who think a flu shot will keep them from getting sick. The ones who think they're saving money by putting things on credit cards with minimal monthly payments. The ones who think they're doing themselves good by moving every few years, refinancing to lower their payments rather than the amount paid and the coupon queens who think they're saving money by buying things they won't use and only bought it because they had a coupon. And the ones that think paying an annual fee to walk in the door of the Grab-n-Grunt is saving them money. I could go on, but I'd sure like to share that rare commodity called "common sense".

do you buy yourself a Christmas present?

    Q

    Comments (62)
No, I don't buy myself a Christmas present. Which is not to say I don't buy something for myself or the house when I come across a great price while shopping holiday specials. I MAY buy myself a gift this week, but not to wrap and put under the tree. DH and I haven't exchanged gifts on Christmas for a number of years, focusing mostly on children in our lives and my mother then a couple of charities. But I lost an earring in July. My everyday pair that I could wear without removing for weeks at a time, often only taking them out for more special occasions or on my way to have my hair cut and colored (where I don't wear jewelry). They weren't exceptionally valuable, but little white gold hoops with small horizontal baguettes. Now I don't have hoops, I have hoop. Long time jeweler here is retiring first of the year and I don't know the young man who has bought his business. The jeweler has been generous with his trade ins, I may go see if he has what I need on the chance that policy will be changing when the store changes hands.

Do you buy your mayo or make it yourself?

    Q

    Comments (35)
As long as you're using a clean implement with the commercial mayonnaise and not introducing a bunch of new bacteria, it's really fine in the fridge for months. They pasteurize the eggs. The sell by dates are the ones they guarantee the product for with the addition of a reasonable amount of time in the pantry for you to open it. That's not for edibility but that they'll guarantee the freshness--it's not rancid, deemulsified, scummy, moldy or otherwise gnarly. If it has been kept clean and cold, and doesn't look, smell or taste funny, it should be fine. The only thing I use sweetened mayonnaise for (I appreciate other people's druthers, just speaking for myself) is broccoli slaw. I like a thick honey poppyseed dressing for that, which has a mayonnaise base. It's not very sweet, but makes a nice counterpoint to the broccoli.

I ordered myself some new sunglasses last week, on sale at RayBan.com. My old ones are so scratched and stretched out they are a challenge to wear so I really needed some new ones. I’m excited to get them - they should be here Monday.

I‘ve shopped but just don’t see anything I want or need. Glad you all are finding rhings you can use.

I have an eye out for a new waffle iron. The old one finally bit the dust.

I may decide to replace the warm robe I bought at Nordstrom's 20 years ago. DGS shortened this one 4" a year ago, so I probably should look for a Petite. Looking for warm, washable, fastens up at the neck, Small or Extra-Small. (I'm not a Petite -- long torso -- but I have no shoulders and am now only 5'4", so it should work in a loose garment.)

Alisande -- Is it possible that it's been over *ten years* since I admired the rug you made for your first grandson's nursery? Do you still have a photo of that? Enjoy your new TV!

A few months ago, I ordered a food processor attachment for my Vitamix using points. I've been wanting a food processor for years and this seemed perfect for my needs and fit the bill for the lack of storage in my smaller kitchen. When it arrived, of course, it does not fit my current model of Vitamix. I stalled on sending it back, as it really was exactly what I wanted. My wonderful DH found the right model on sale yesterday while I was working and bought it. The old Vitamix will go to one of the kids. I am a happy girl.

I had my car worked on yesterday so my gift is new shocks and springs. Unfortunately the bill was $300 more then my Xmas bonus so no real gift giving this year..

I've been shopping online for a microwave, mine is about to give up the ghost, I'm afraid. So far haven't found any good deals at all.

Will probably start shopping for the Great-Grans in the next day or two.

The house will be getting a camera doorbell this year as the old doorbell has died. It wasn't hardwired, though, so the new one will have to be battery powered.. I've been reading reviews and just can't make up my mind; they seem contradictory in their recommendations.

Chisue, yes--he was born 10 years ago in July. Hard to believe. He and his mother wear the same size shoes! Here's the rug--thank you for remembering. And by the way, you remind me that my robe is 18 years old. It's heavy terrycloth by Laura Ashley, and I wear it all year round. It hasn't changed in all those years--probably because I wear it only from the shower downstairs to my bedroom upstairs.

Daisychain, I can see why you're happy! My food processor sounds as though it's about to give up the ghost along with Rusty's microwave (or bite the dust along with Cooper's waffle iron), so I've been looking at new ones. But should I buy one for myself or put it on my Amazon wish list? I'm still undecided.

Samkaren, I was looking at the Cocomelon "Wheels on the Bus" video yesterday, and observed that the bouncy bus really could use new shocks. lol

Nicole, you are a super-shopper. What brand laptop did you get?

Ray-Bans, sharp knives, schoolhouse clock . . . lots to enjoy. Keep 'em coming!

Not unless it is a washing machine. The one inside seems to be conking out. When we moved here, we had a year old machine and put it in the office in the barn, since there is a hook up in there. I need to get a pair of channel locks to hook up the hoses, since my hands aren't strong enough. That makes two pair that have mysteriously disappeared since we moved here. So hard to find someone to work that doesn't help themselves to the tools. I am hoping that the one in the barn office still works, after setting up for two years.

i have no plans to buy anything...

i am in the process of purging, Big Time!!! so i really dont want to buy any "things"

I splurged on two Cat Studio Christmas pillows. I wanted a little something different to refresh the holiday decor in the living room and I have more than one way to use the pillows so I'll enjoy them for a few years. I also bought a used copy of Nigella Lawson's cookbook, Feast. I'm looking forward to trying out some new recipes throughout the coming year.

    Don't really need anything.

I usually do get myself something, usually not a real "splurge" but a small luxury or just something I want but could live without (exception was the year I bought a beautiful sapphire and diamond band (later stolen...) -- but this year I haven't decided on what. Perhaps a CD of my favorite Benny Goodman album if I can find one, since my record player is no longer in use.

Fun2BHere, I may not be related to George Washington or Henry VIII, but my great-great-grandparents are the great-great-great-grandparents of Nigella Lawson. I'm just sayin' , , ,

And Raee, my late father-in-law was a dentist in Manhattan, and Benny Goodman was one of his patients. I'm finding all sorts of connections here! :-)

Well, our son and daughter-in-law gifted me with a quite generous gift card last Christmas to one of my favorite home stores. I’ve only used half of it so far, and so our 27 y/o daughter (who’s home for a long Thanksgiving holiday) and I are heading out to spend it and another gift card this afternoon.

I have had new flooring installed so I am also purging as my furnishings are returned. I will be happy with two new tops and two new pairs of jeans. Also had to get new earrings and bracelet to round out for free shipping.

Normally I don't. We just shop for the grandkids. The adults don't exchange gifts between them that much anymore.

But around a month ago my riding instructor mentioned I should "ask Santa for a new saddle." I ride in whatever saddle fits the horse right now although he does take extra care keeping my needs in mind when choosing one that will work. It never occurred to me to have my own, since I don't own a horse. But I want to get into reining next year. So I guess that means it's time to own my own saddle. So saddle shopping is on my to do list. He gave me a list of criteria to meet that he thinks will fit me best for the sport. I put out the word to the kids that if they want to give me anything for Xmas donations will be happily accepted. Even a good used reining saddle doesn't come cheap. If you told me 3 years ago I would one day be shopping for a reining saddle I would have thought you were nuts. But here I am. :-)

Nicole, that is one beautiful laptop. Big too!

Wildchild, I remember when my family was buying saddles. They're an investment!

Betsy, I love the "rounding out." :-)

Lynn, that sounds like fun. Let us know what you get.

Nope, I have ten rooms of stuff I need to unload. We don't exchange adult gifts any longer so basically I don't need to shop at all. What a switch from decades ago buying for the parents, aunts, kids, and friends. Now many of the friends are dead and all of the parents and aunts are and my adult kids and I decided no gifts anymore. We used to go crazy buying four and five each for each member.

Yes, quite a bit actually, but just things we (I) felt like we need. A new coffee maker as ours is on its last legs, sheets, two litter boxes, B1G1 shampoo/conditioner, half priced eyeliner pencil, Christmas lights for our tree, and a new parka to replace my 16 year old one. There was a lot more I could have purchased, but they were wants - and like many others here, we are trying to reduce our stuff.

Probably. Do not know exactly what yet. I already ordered and received a magical wonderful foot massager that has been in my amazon wish list for a couple years. My feet are always aching because I walk a lot. It was over 300 dollars, but I saw it had a 50% coupon off one day and bought it and I love love love it. Of course when my SO found out about it he insisted that he pay for it, so that doesn't count as buying it for myself. Usually this time of year when I get my profit sharing check at work I will go and get random things out of my amazon wish list for myself. I want more christmas stuff. We shall see...

FinallyHome, that is very cool! I don't go anywhere either. Last year I bought myself a long red Lands' End coat. It's been in my closet ever since, complete with tags.

Wow, Seagrass--they really are beauties! I didn't know Instant Pot made an air fryer. It's too big for me, but boy, it looks like fun! The Shun is bound to be fun too.

I have bought an Ooni pizza oven. I have been eyeing them for a while and they had them 20% off.

I impulse bought a Vitamix at Costco but I think it'll go back. Think I'd rather buy a bamix if I want to spend some $$$.

It’s not much, but I bought myself a ThermoDrop from Thermoworks. I got a few for stocking stuffers, and I’m keeping one for myself. We love o ur meat thermometer from them, and the Drop is a zipperpull for instant temperature readings anywhere.

I'm buying a used Anchor Lock trolling motor for my bass boat from a friend. It's pretty cool in that it uses GPS technology. You control it with a remote and can set it so the boat stays in the exact same spot by itself or you can set it to follow a straight path from point A to point B.

I should add that i plan to shop for a new sewing machine. My old Singer has gone belly up and I just need something fairly simple. Nothing terribly expensive as at 73 I no longer plan any large sewing projects. I have not had time to go look at what is out there. As things slow down next week with the large volunteer project I have been leading, I plan to start looking. Probably not the best of times but will see what I can find.

It’s been great to see what fun purchases each of you are making.

I ordered a warm robe from Amazon, but I doubt it will be warm *enough*. I was surprised to see so many robes stamped "Sold Out", but I suppose that's partly the season and partly the backlog of goods 'in transit'. This was the case everywhere, various stores as well as Amazon.

Do I want an instant pot? I've been afraid to use my old pressure cooker, thinking the seal looks pretty 'iffy'. Also, I've only used one with a gas stove, and now have electric smoothtop, making it hard to judge heat. (One beef stew Vesuvius was quite enough, thank you.) I see the pots have their own heat source. Any suggestions? We don't 'fry' much of anything. I'd use it for stews and other favorite family 'glops' -- our term for moist dishes.

Well, inspired on comments here, I just bought myself a new thermometer for my basement plant-growing area and a ThermoDrop for DH (thanks bpath!), and a wireless doorbell kit with two outside buttons and one inside chime receiver (thanks sealavender!) - DH likes it because we can add on all these other bits and pieces if this first set works out. We've needed a doorbell for six years now ... enough procrastinating!

Chisue, we got an instapot in a benefit auction last year. DH has used it, and while it is faster than the crock pot it is more ”fribbly“ as he says. That is, it calls for more monitoring, But it does work well, especially for his beets.

I buy anything I need/want at all times. Just fortunate, I guess. We worked hard and deserve it. Although I am not needy at all, not materialistic and very basic living.

Chisue, I have an Instant Pot and several good cookbooks to go with it. I think it's interesting, and sometimes fun, and I'm not sorry I got it. But don't use it as much as i thought I would. I think the reason is I'm rarely in a hurry in the kitchen. It's a great time saver, but I don't mind having soups, etc., simmer on the stove for long periods of time. However, if you enjoy pressure cooking, this is the appliance for you! I plan to try out new recipes for mine this winter.

I live alone, and bought the 3-qt. model. I think it would be good for those who cook for two. To me, it's plenty big. But others tried to talk me into the 6 qt model, and one advantage of that one is that most recipes are written for it. Because of the cook times, it's not always a simple matter to cut the recipe in half. More cookbooks have been coming out with recipes for the 3 qt. Instant Pot though. Let us know if you get one.

PS: You can probably find some old threads where we discussed Instant Pots at the KT. Lots of happy users, as I recall.

i am splurging this season. i am waiting on new windows , new flooring, and two days ago i bought a new electric stove plus a new refrigerator! Both old ones had been purchased in 2004 and i didnt think the oven was acting right so started looking for a new stove… but ended up getting a new refrigerator too. ;)

Chisue, I use my instant pot all the time. I like that I can sautee the meat and onions in it for some dish and then use the same pot to make spaghetti sauce, chili, soup, whatever. I use it in reverse for the few times I've made chicken n dumplings too, cook the chicken, dedone it, add back to pot, turn on sautee feature and then drop the homemade dumplings into the boiling pot.

I was just in the kitchen and realized I probably need to replace the cutting boards the exchange students destroyed and one of my frying pans. One of the last kids used super high heat apparently and turned my pretty purple non- stick pan black. It's also full of scratches from them using metal on it after being asked not to. I've used it a few times since but wonder if the non-stick part is now more toxic.
