how can I transform my house exterior to modern farmhouse?

I’m thinking of painting my door, garage, and trims black. Everything else will be white.

Any paint color suggestions? I’m on a budget so SW & BM are too pricey. I was thinking of getting Behr paint.

Paint the whole house white. Black trims.

No black garage door. It's too much black... it will fade quickly and look cheap.

Behr paint is not less expensive than SW or BM. Remember, you get what you pay for.

I think I do like a richer tone like what you linked to. That house overall is beautiful. The only thing I didn't love about it was that there are many different colors of wood--rich red outside, light colored wood floors, etc. That being said, if I had the shower from that house, I'd probably be so happy I wouldn't notice the different wood stains.

Our new house has an interior kitchen, and it is fine with me, but keep in mind our main floor is about a 1/3 of the size of yours, about 8 feet away from the windows in the dining room, and on a city lot that is about 0.14 acres with my neighbours about 9-10 ft on either side. You have a much different space - and a lot more land to work with. The model home shows how many lights you need to keep it bright (on side note, please do not turn your ceilings into Swiss cheese - pot lights have a purpose but at a cost in terms of a less “sealed home” - so use them sparingly for that AND aesthetics. Also, that laundry room is small for 6 people. And far away from where all the dirty laundry is generated and clean laundry is destined! We had a smaller one for a family of 6 growing up but again...entire house was about 2/3 of your main floor. And while there were more constraints in our case if you are building a house this size I assume you have budget to hire an architect and make a plan that really works for your family and works with - not against land. I am in no way someone who “architect only” (we are not using one - we went with a modified plan from a local “mid-sized” builder) but again with that land and a healthy budget - it is worth it to get an architect involved.

I would try to lose the yellow tones of what is there now and take the house more taupe/grey and the trim white. (The black trim creeped me out. I think it's too harsh.) One feature of the present set-up that seems disturbing to me is the post spacing, as it is not symmetrical. One net negative effect is that the porch opening is too narrow to be truly inviting. I'd explore placement of the 2 (from left) post, moving it farther left so as to increase the opening width and symmetry with the right pair of posts. I'd also explore uniform spacing across the porch and see if that happens to increase the opening width. The builder was focused on correlating the opening with the door, but this doesn't matter nearly as much. I have to mention, too that the posts are wimpy, making the house look cheap. I'd replace them with some professionally made hefty but graceful posts. The railing and pickets need to be more refined looking. Make some wide steps that equal the width of an expanded opening, a spacious landing, and a walk that is 4' wide.

I just don’t personally care for that shade of slightly yellow toned beige, or really for any beige, but remember that color is very personal and it isn’t my color sense that matters here, it is yours. In my job (mapmaking) I use color to communicate information, so I might be a bit more opinionated about color palettes than many. That doesn’t mean I am right, just opinionated. I gravitate to soft sages and grayed blues and greens or various shades of gray for house exteriors. Indoors I like very pale warm colors on rooms that don’t have much outside light because during the low light of our long winters it just feels friendlier to me. In my current home there are painted hemlock wide plank floors that date from when the house was built. We went with historic colors that were already there in the layers, so I do have a couple of rooms with a slightly deeper and more golden color than your home, and it isn’t my favorite, but I have grown used to it. I just thought you might want to try out different colors to see if there is another shade that you or the rest of your household like better. Especially as some folks, though obviously not everyone, has a bit of extra time on their hands right now.

You can't, unless you start with a bulldozer and lots of money.

You can go any number of ways. I would lean toward the classic with your house. Wood garage door or perhaps a gel stain to give the door a wood look. The carriage lights I used are not to scale in my visual - but this is just to give you the general idea.

Also enhancing the landscaping and bringing in a few solar lights on the grounds would be nice upgrades. You have a nice house.

A farmhouse it isnt, and it never will be without a whole lot of dollars. However, it is a very cute house. The first picture, that Celery posted looks really nice. I dont like the two with the brown doors, it makes the garage stand out too much, and the house recede. Appreciate the uniqueness of the house itself, dont ruin it by trying to make it something it can never be.

Your house is awesome!! So unique!! I like celery’s first design. Plus maybe grow some heather or something along that red block retaining wall in the front, something that will soften it. Go farmhouse crazy on the interior, but let its destiny rest on the exterior. JMHO.
