Telescopic or non-telesc. downdraft system that starts automatically

I am renovating the house, shopping for an induction cooktops. Now I have a old Jenn air electric stove with downdraft, so the costs for installing a hood would be higher than using a downdraft system that would use the existing duct. Therefore I am considering to use a downdraft system also in the new kitchen (although I know it is not as efficient). What I need though is a system that is embedded or connected to the induction cooktop, so that the hood starts automatically when i turn on the cooktop. My issue is that I always forget to turn on my current downdraft, and my girlfriend is worst than me. So I need a model that automatically lifts and turn on a telescopic downdraft, or just turn on if not telescopic. The Best Capture would not do this. Do you know of any solution with any brand?

There don't seem to be any downdraft hoods that do this. There are non-downdraft hoods that do.

Downdrafts are not merely ”inefficient”. They are a marketers dream scam. “Reverse the laws of physics!” 🙄

Did they put a price on it, on their Web-site? If not I would stay away, as "To Me" that is "Sleeze bag marketing"!!! SZ Wolf used to do that but now they have MSRP up on their web-site, at least last time I looked they did. Think about it, every item in grocery store has price, every gas station, any car at a dealership, new or used. They do that so you will call and get some "Hot Shot Closer" on ya----Not my cup of tea alto I'm more than up to the tasks of handing one of those, (hot shots)!!! Gary

It's been a while, but we did finally make a decision. While my new induction cooktop is still in the box, waiting for the granite to arrive, we have already installed a 36" KitchenAid island hood. In general I am happy with the choice. My DH is not so happy. The hood seems to work great, though a little hard to tell since our old cooktop is 46" and my favorite cooking spots don't fall directly beneath the hood. The one issue we ran into was the height. We do not have high ceilings (9ft?). Turns out, the "adjustable" height of the unit is designed to accomodate the extra high ceiling, not the average. The installer could not make it any shorter than the fixed part of the hanging bracket and outer cover. So, it is lower than we wanted. I'm fine, because I am only 5'3". DH is a little taller and he keeps worrying he will hit his head on a corner. I think if I had known about the height thing, we might have kept looking at other models. But this is in our price range, and we have other KA appliances, including the induction cooktop that will soon live beneath it.

Its not just cooking odours a vent removes. Moisture is generated both by the gas stove operating and by the heating and boiling of food on or in the range/oven. Each person puts a couple of cups of moisture into the indoor air in a day. Each pet does as well. Steam rooms/showers, regular shower and bathing pump moisture into a house, not just the bathroom. Laundry contributes. That moisture has to go somewhere...my suggestion is to remove it via a powered vent of some sort. In this day and age, knowing what we know of HVAC, the issues of interior moisture, mould, mildew and such it amazes me how many still don't use fans or venting. I'll take a half hour of noise over a mouldy home any day. And there are plenty of options that make a range or stove top vent almost silent. Ditto with bathrooms. I wouldn't live without powered venting, at least one of 90CFM per thousand square feet. I have no idea if that is code or best practice or not but that is what we do and we simply don't have moisture issues despite living in a temperate rain forest. If they are in rental homes they are wired in via humidistat so there is no option not to run them.

re exhaust. Makes no difference to me what other people choose to do, but here is a cautionary tale. We just redid our 7 y/o kitchen top to bottom and wall to wall. We have been in the house about a year. The prior owners had a recirculating thing. When we took it down, it was nasty filthy. On close inspection, the pendant lighting, the cabinets and their hinges, above the cabinets, and the ceilings were dirty and grimy. Icky, ick, ick. I had to take the pendants totally apart and clean every little piece. We painted the ceiling and walls with some blocker paint after scrubbing it all and before repainting so the grease won't come through the new paint. FWIW - I don't think they cooked much and we didn't knowing the hood wasn't really a hood and we didn't want our house smelling like dinner. One advantage of not having proper ventilation for me personally was that it forced us to learn outdoor grilling and BBQ.

About the best I can come up with is going to be a real compromise. Because the downdraft system has multiple speeds maybe wiring it to come on in tandem with a dedicated can light above the cooking surface for strong task lighting would get you partway there. But I think the improved performance of the Best Cattura over a JA system might get you to use it more. Or a printed placard at the cooktop controls could help. I've seen where it can take eight repetitions to learn a new procedure.

One idea: Use a current sensor relay to sense when a cooktop element was turned on or off. Use the relay to apply power to the hood when the cooktop was in use.

Thank you wdccruise. Nice idea. But since I have a island floating in the middle of an open space kitchen, that means I need to run an electric cable from the cooktop all the way around to the hood....seems pretty impractical, unless I am missing something.

You're installing a downdraft hood adjacent to the cooktop. They're both in the island as are their electrical cables.
