Hard vs soft water

My city water is 25 grains hard. i have a hard water tap at kitchen sink but also has a softener for hot water. all other faucets in house have soft cold water. cold kitchen water tastes lousy. i have no filter. if i use hot water then that means it is salty tasting due to softener. i think the hot water tastes slightly better then cold. is this due to some filtering effect by running water thru softener resin bed first? or is it all in my head?

There are several issues / questions in your post:

1. You have a common setup - softened water at all the indoor taps except the cold in the kitchen.

2. You can easily make the cold water in your kitchen smell / taste better by adding an under-sink carbon filter. Such a filter will remove chlorine, tastes, odors, VOC's and various other things. Don't go down the rabbit hole though -- a simple carbon filter will do wonders.

3. If your softener is adjusted properly and reasonably new, you shouldn't have a "salty taste" even at 25 gpg (I also have 25 gpg hardness and my soft water doesn't taste salty).

4. Taste is a subjective thing: Water softeners remove calcium, magnesium and iron and replace those ions with sodium ions. Does that taste better - It's hard to know.

My good friend has installed softeners and repaired them for 25 yrs. he installed one at my parents house and i can taste difference with sft water at their house. i cant even drink it. cold water in their kitchen is great.. bathroom near my old bedroom was soft water. ugh, couldnt stand getting a drink at night. i grew up with that water. so, i also can tell difference with water at my house. i used to work at soda machine manufacturer. we made beverage dispensers. . spent lots of time in lab. hard water, soft wter, filtered water, even deionized water was available. we needed it for testing our sensors. i hate drinking soft water.

Our town has several large well that go thru filters, we have a water softner as its needed for clothes and dishes and stuff as otherwise our water is hard without it. Currently im useing that same water to water my indoor fig plants and there ok for now and also drink it. When spring comes i use the hose which has the unsoften water and thats for the large potted fig tree's but i also collect rain water when it rains and use that as well during the growing season outdoors. As Gorgi says i drink from faucet as well, its been said that the bottle stuff has all the garbage as well but thats another story . Martin

Keep in mind that it would be a good idea to have one with a water softener if you plan on moving in the future and taking your dishwasher with you. You may end up moving where you will need the built-in softener. When I moved to Arizona, where our hardness is approximately 20-30 grains, I installed a whole-house water softener but left a hard water line to feed the dishwasher. Why? Because feeding a Miele hard water and letting it use its built-in softener to adjust the total hardness in the wash water is preferable to feeding it pre-softened water which you then cannot add hardness to. When fed hard water, the Miele dishwashers will soften the hard water but also mix it with unsoftened water to ensure the wash water inside the tub is somewhere around 4 grains total hardness. It's all handled by the dishwasher. However, if you feed it softened water then it cannot add hardness back to it. The result is 0 hardness water in the dishwasher which will lead to etching if you're not extremely careful by using non-phosphated detergents and lower wash temperatures.

All I can say is that I have the Shark Steam Mop and 3000 feet of oak hardwood floors. The first time I used it, there was so much residue from other cleaning products that it took five complete floor cleanings before all the stuff came up and I had satiny feeling, perfectly clean floors. If you only did it once, and only used 5 pads for the whole thing, then I think you probably didn't actually finish cleaning whatever build up was there. I use 3 pads just doing the kitchen...and that is after I'd been using the steam mop for a while.

So, Alice has the right answer: Kinnetico differentiates itself in ways that don't matter. Twin tanks - so you have continuous soft water vs not having soft water once every 10 days at 3AM. Not using electricity - about 2 buck a year. Using soft water to backwash - ummm, ok... No, it's not like "washing your clothes in dirty water" - but the imagery is intentionally effective and misleading. Keep in mind that shortly after regeneration the resin will have unsoftened water going through it. Not to mention the water that my softener uses to backwash is exactly the same source as my drinking water. If it's fine to drink, it's fine to backwash the resin. None of that nonsense matters one bit. . Kinnetico is overpriced for the hardware and for the service - and you will never make up that difference in a longer service life. Not ever. My $600 Fleck based unit with 10% crosslinked resin takes my 21 grain per gallon water and softens it to less than 1 grain - as measured with my Hach test kit. That's ALL I need it to do. None of the other stuff matters. The $2,000 Kinnetico will not make your water "more soft". The resin on my standard water softener will last 12-15 years before it needs to be re-bedded and the Fleck 5600sxt valve is one of the most dependable on the market - as well as being very common. Rebuild kits are readily available for $50. The entire valve is $200-250. After 15 years I could even replace the ENTIRE unit (wasteful, but I could) and then do it again in another 15 years and still not cost what the Kinnetico costs. Bottom Line: A very reliable, very serviceable and long-lasting water softer can be purchased that will soften your water for 1/3 - 1/2 the cost of the Kinnetico.

We have both hard and soft cold water in our kitchen (different sinks) and our family can't tell much of a difference. Our water comes from the town wells and our hardness is 24 grains per gallon, 1 ppm iron.

Again, taste is subjective. I'm not going to try to convince you that "it's all in your head".

That said new softeners that are properly configured don't produce water that has the same taste and feel as they did 40 years ago, for example.

Put a simple carbon filter on your unsoftened cold water in your kitchen and you should be good.

Ha, i did have a whole house carbon filter in laundry room for kitchen line then it started dripping so i took it out.

coffee at parents house is 2x better tasting. they have no hard water filter as well.

i have a brita pitcher in garage fridge. takes up too much space in kitchen. i have it rough.

So I'm not clear at this point, is there a question?

If you want to improve taste and odor (as well as remove some chemicals) at a reasonable cost and hassle, use a carbon filter on your drinking water. All filters require maintenance.

I use Pentek Big Blue cartridge holders and KDF / Carbon filter.

If you want an easier solution - use the Pentair Everpure. It's got a lower capacity (in treated gallons) but is nsf certified and easy maintenance.
