Retexturing walls after wall paper removal

I was wondering what the steps would be after removing wall paper. My walls have fine orange peel texture and in the upstairs bathroom and master bedroom it has old wall paper that goes only halfway up the wall. Most of the bathroom wall paper is removed but the glue/paste is left on and needs to be removed still. I keep reading that the walls will need to be skim coated after that, is that correct? If so do I only skim coat half the wall and spray orange peel over or the whole wall?

My initial knee jerk is that if must ask this question,you shouldn't take on the texturing.

My husband has done the spray texturing before in our nursery because there were big patches that needed knew dry wall, but I was curious as to what the steps were when it came to after wall paper removal.

If you patch directly over the torn drywall, the patching compound will likely bubble and then you will have to cut out the bubbles and patch again, repeating this process until there are no more bubbles. Using the Gardz will seal those areas so that they will not bubble when patched. It is also important to lock down any residual wallpaper paste before patching or painting. Gardz does that as well. To me, the Dirtex is overkill because if you have stripped wallpaper you have already done several rinses on the walls....they are clean.

If you do a search for border removal, you should get lots of posts--seems many people have this problem. From my own experience, first determine if the border will come off fairly easily by holding a wet sponge against it to slightly saturate & then try pulling any loose areas. What eventually worked for me, after using a paper tiger & removal gel, and a clothes steamer (not good-melted the paint), was just using a cloth & saturating the remnants of the border with Downy liquid fabric softener. Not sure if that's what did the trick, but it worked as well as anything else & smelled nice too! Just be prepared for possibly lots of tedious work--mine was like scraping confetti off the wall...scraping with my "Pampered Chef" pot scraper & fingernails. After it's all removed, cover with a coat of Gardz; this will prevent any residual glue from getting into your new topcoat. Happy scraping!

Sanding latex paint is a futile attempt at smoothing. Better to skim coat a little drywall compound over the area and then sand with a sanding block. After sanding , run a well dampened block sponge along the area where the patching meets the old wall area. This will get rid of an minor ridge of compound. You will want to prime this new patch, but use an old, worn roller in order to impart a slight texture, as your new patch will probably be noticeably smoother than the old roller texture on the wall. Further, I would give the new patch a quick, light coat of the finish coat paint, followed by a general painting of the room. Should a "flashing" of the patch still be visible, you may be forced to apply a second general finish coat.

If the wallpaper was put on textured walls, then once you remove all the wallpaper and all the glue (its water soluble), and clean the walls very well, you should only need to prime it with gardz and then repaint it. No, you should not have to skim coat it.

If and how well glue need's to be removed depends on how course final texture is. I wouldn't expect glue residue to be a problem if wall is primed to even hold out. Unless upper half is smooth,I would skim it if I skimmed lower wall.

Remove the glue/residue and then see if you have a difference in texture between the previously wallpapered section and the orange-peel section.
