Snow damage to Star Magnolia.
Comments (2)all broken branches need to be PROPERLY pruned off ... w/o a picture.. we cant really provide any more specific info ... with no insult to the root system.. there is no reason for your plant NOT to explode with growth, due to the reduction of the canopy .. and no root damage ... it will probably need some selective pruning over the next few years ... to train it back into a nice shape.. but one thing for sure.. FORGET WHAT IT USED TO LOOK LIKE ... it will never be that again .. and look forward to what it will look like in the future ... if you need help with proper pruning techniques... post a picture... and we can be more precise ... see link good luck ken Here is a link that might be useful: link...See MoreSouthern Magnolia (pic)
Comments (20)Island, I also have this cultivar. I may be chopping it down this year! I have about a half dozen cultivars of grandiflora--this one is quite different from any of the others. It grows maybe twice as fast if not more than the others It branches densely, even to ground level Green on the underside (as you noted) Lighter green leaves Leaf shape is almost avocado-like Mine does not burn as harshly has yours, but it burns more than the others Biggest problem are its poor tolerance for any snow or ice, while the others look fine. My poor guy suffered collateral damage from other downed trees in the hurricane and just took another hit. It even got attacked by deer this past November. I have always identified it as 'Green Giant'. Sure it would try to recoup but hate seeing the damage....See MoreSabal Minor and Southern Magnolia in snow
Comments (22)You will not likely see the damage for a week or two. Then it starts to show. Follow up with us to let us know if they made it. Acuba are another plant that the deer love! Islandbreeze, I wonder if you have a different predator eating your sawpalms and yuccas? They definitely leave mine alone. miketropic, as far as I know it's just Fatsia japonica. I've attached a pic. It's in "bloom" right now. It stands about 7 feet high. You can see how sparse it is at the bottom where the deer have dined....See MoreStressed southern magnolia, need advice.
Comments (12)Just speculating here... 40" of rain per year in DC is a good amount. A lot of factors are involved in a dry well's rate of percolation into the soil, but this potentially keeps the root zone much wetter than a) this species prefers and/or b) this particular tree experienced up until two years ago. The root damage alone is egregious, but keeping the environment moist around damaged roots can spell disaster. What is the soil like around the dry well just after a good rain? Do you know the complete details of this dry well (e.g. exact location, number of pipes/downspouts leading into it, etc.)? Also, stop fertilizing it, particular in this stressed state. Unless you know your soil has deficiencies, just eliminate the fertilizer for good....See MoreZone 7b
