Comments (8)""You want to make sure all seaming is level to the touch which is the most importanr step before topcoating". Meant to say befiore skimcoating, not topcoating." Either way, feel is not going to tell if the finish is at level 5. A light (even a flashlight) parallel to the surface will reveal if the finish is up to level 5. The light washing over the surface is one of the times that level 5 can really provide a nice wall. Every slight hump or hollow will show. Using a light across the surface avoids the slight color variations fooling the eye. After p[riming the color variation is gone, making it less likely to fool your eyes, but a light works all the time (and the installer should have used a light before even thinking of priming to check the job)....See Morelevel 5 drywall versus plaster veneer
Comments (5)A "veneer plaster system" is often called "blueboard" and is usually about 1/16" of plaster over 1/2" gypsum drywall although it can have a double coating. Blueboard is much harder, tougher, easier to repair, and holds paint longer than taped drywall even with a level 5 finish. In markets where "blueboard" is common it is often cheaper than any other system. Where it is not common it might be more expensive. The plaster finish on blueboard is so hard and beautiful that it can be left unpainted. I don't know if that would look modern Mediterranean or not. In an earthquake any drywall system would probably have the same resistance to cracking. If the exterior structural shell and foundation are unable to successfully resist lateral movement you can't expect the interior walls and finishes to do so....See MorePainting Garage Drywall
Comments (9)The unpainted garages I have seen have had the basic mudding done between the drywall boards and the nails have been quickly covered over with drywall mud (that's the spackle you are seeing). Based on estimate I have gotten from painters, yes, there is $1000 worth of work to do this at near to the quality level of the inside of your house. I don't know what level of perfection you want, but you should be able to get someone in to just spray paint two coats of paint (or one coat primer and one coat paint) onto the walls and ceiling for less than $1000. My gut feeling is that it's not going to take 10 gallons to cover it. You could save a lot of money if you did it yourself with a roller. If you have never painted before, this would be a great project to start with....See MoreBest roller cover to paint Level-5 smooth walls?
Comments (5)Spraying paint and back rolling is probably the best way to apply the paint evenly. If you are rolling manually out of a bucket or whatever, the time it takes to load the roller with paint is what makes it hard to keep a wet edge, especially if the walls are big. If you can't keep a wet edge, this is how lap lines may show up. If the Natura is washable, it should be just as easy as applying an eggshell. True flat paint doesn't form a washable skin on top of the paint film when it is dry and is filled with cheap fillers like chalk so that is why we use the bigger naps for flats. The best way to roll either paints though is to apply it, and then make your final pass with the roller in one direction top to bottom....See MoreRockin' Fine Finish
