Granite Installation

Hi, We are in the process of getting granite installed. We wanted a double bullnose edge. The pictures show underneath the cabinets. It looks like the installers just used pieces of granite to raise the granite 3/4" to allow for the bullnose and then glued to granite slab to those pieces of granite. Is this normal? Thanks so much for your help and input.

You have 2cm thickness material. The front edge is built up....it's stacked. This is called a laminated edge and yes, it's normal in some areas of the country. I don't see it often where I am. Your tops (stacked 2x-2cm) are total thickness of 4cm, not 3cm. My sister has tops done just like this in her newer home.

You can see the horizontal seam if you look closely.

Where are you? Sometimes this is a regional thing. In my area, 3cm is typical.

IMO, when a fabricator screws up an install, he has to do whatever it takes to correct his mistakes and make the job look and function the way it is supposed to. If he cuts the granite too small leaving large gaps where there shouldn't be any, he needs to correct that. He can't just squirt caulk in the gaps and call it a day. Tre's solution above would work for the overhangs, but what about the ends of the countertop where it meets the wall or is adjacent to a cabinet? How do they intend to fix the gaps there? How do they propose to fix the yellow filled areas? The crack at the sink? The blue showing between the countertop and the sink? I would want them to be very clear in explaining how they intend to address each and every issue before proceeding. I'm a little unclear on this ... did they consider your job completed when they left last week?

I am not understanding what OP wants to happen in terms of expectations. Remodeling is frustrating but there seems to be no damage done since the stone wasn't cut and therefore the issue isn't whether OP is going to be forced to accept the stone. It's obvious the stoneyard/installer should refund the deposit and I am assuming will be happy to do so. It seems to be a perfect example of mutual misunderstanding resulting in no contract formation - the classic case regarding the mistake in which ship named Peerless would be used to ship the cargo. Since there was no meeting of the minds, there was no contract :-). It's certainly fun when something that I learned in the first weeks of law school still has relevance in the modern world - I am waiting for a post on caveat emptor and medieval sexual enhancements :-). Ruffles vs Wichelhaus A good example that illustrates what is a mistake in contract law is the case of Ruffles vs. Wichelhaus. There was a contract to ship merchandise on a vessel named Peerless. However, the parties involved had a different understanding of each other. Each party was referring to a different vessel, and therefore, they did not agree when to ship the merchandise. In this case, both parties thought they were in consent until they realized were both misguided about each other’s different meaning. As such, an agreement was not formed since there was no mutual assent between the parties involved in the formation stage of the agreement. Like a unilateral mistake, the best practice to avoid a mutual mistake is to consult an experienced attorney to determine whether a defence of mutual mistake is a viable option for you.

Perhaps you think this sort of thing happens commonly so there’d be some relatable experience and consensus about what percentage discount you should get. But your situation does not happen commonly; actually it’s rare. Typically when people have problems with their fabricator, it’s about seam placement, vein direction, the overhang, the joints. And on the rare occasions I’ve seen people report flaws in their stone, I’ve never seen one that is a mesh imprint—and I’ve been a regular on this forum for years. The more common response I‘ve seen here would be “I’ve spent thousands on this counter, this is my dream kitchen, and I am not marring my kitchen with this. It needs to be replaced”. You have made it clear you want the discount instead. You will have to figure out your own discount percentage then, as there is no “industry norm” as you put it, and no one has “comps” for you.

If the granite front edge is straight, but the overhangs vary, that's on your cabinet installer. They needed to shim the cabinets at the back. Is the unsquare seam square with the granite front edge? The gap at the wall is a little sloppy.

You're welcome....but since I don't see this in my area, it'd be nice to get feedback from a pro that does laminated 4cm a lot. I'm not sure about the plywood and how that was done.

I think the unusual bit here is using scrap granite to raise the counters. Makes sense because it is exactly the perfect size. (Maybe it's normal--mine wasn't done like that but there are many different techniques out there.)

I'd be tempted to ask that the color of the seam filler in that corner be fixed, but otherwise it looks really nice.

Yah Fori, I'm not sure what the scrap pieces are for? Potentially blocking material to help strengthen the lamination? I won't pretend to know this since we only do 3cm. Hopefully a granite pro will chime in. Joe, where are you?

Interesting that the bullnose is sitting over the cabinet frame. I had counters done in CA, which is mostly 2 cm slabs, and they place the slab over plywood and part of the bullnose hung down past the cabinet frame.

From the last pic it looks like they had to build it up because if they didn't the counters would interfere with the drawers opening. And since they had to build it up the counters they were placed as far as they could beyond the cabinet and also not have a gap between the counter bottom and cabinet.

This looks to be a "expectations not maintained" situation. If they just assumed you'd know what it would look like since it'd have to be built up I don't think that was right. In my opinion they should have told you no to the bullnose.

The spacers are not the way I would do it but not a problem. However, the thick, off color seam on the bottom of the corner is atrocious.

Countertop seams ALWAYS look worse when you zoom in close with a high def camera! I'm amazed at how bad some of my really awesome seams look on camera vs the naked eye from 3 ft back.
