Raised Ranch Exterior Needs Help! What would you do?
Comments (6)Thank you Doug and Denita for your ideas. Doug, I love your landscaping ideas and the garage awning change. I had not thought of making it dark like that, but it looks really nice. Denita, I shuddered when I saw your comment about my shutters. I always thought mine were sized right. I walk around my neighborhood cringing at ill sized shutters. Do you think mine are too long? wide? And I agree about the ones on the large window. I would love to take them off, but it will leave holes in the siding which I think will be uglier than the shutters...Those might have to stay until new siding. Thank you both!...See MoreHelp with landscaping 1950’s ranch
Comments (15)Please don't even think of painting the stone. It's part of the 50s vibe that is incredibly popular with young people and is maintenance free. Less is more with this style, so bone up on it so you can appreciate the materials, lines, and design in keeping with its architecture. Sometimes people try to turn their 50s house into farmhouse or some other style. It will mean less work for you to honor its bones inside and out. I have an Ideabook on MCM, so browse through to get a sense of houses built at that time. It is true that not every house built in the 50s is what we think of as MCM, but that style of stonework, wood trim, straight lines, small windows was very popular and has come back in a big way. A small garden center can help you create a couple deep garden beds with a mix of shrubs, grasses, perennials. If you don't want a lot of work, then mulch the beds with yellow/tan stone to echo your stone façade. Put the focus on the left side, along with planting a tree "island" in the lawn. But do have a plan ahead of time for planting. I do hope you'll consider repainting your porch in a color from the stone and getting a dark railing. A bright turquoise door would add a midcentury feeling and opening up the front a bit. Your house is wonderful from the outside anyway. Don't "remuddle" it. Turquoise/teal door yellow stone MCM style. Door makes entrance more prominent....See More1950s Brick Ranch - Landscaping Help
Comments (22)Loving the suggestions and brainstorming. The thing that gets me is that concrete slab. I have considered extending the roof and making the concrete slab level to create a covered front porch, but there are some cons with that, one mostly being that the roof isn't even 2 years old yet and I hadn't considered that idea before I had it put on. Another con is that it will limit a lot of light to the bay window. Yet, I'm torn on other options. If I keep the concrete slab, I will either have it tiled or look into stamped concrete. There is a company in a nearby city that refinishes concrete in that manner. I realize though, what nickel_kg said, that unless I remove the concrete between the driveway and the landing or put an additional, curved walkway to the landing, that my home looks a bit unwelcoming. I definitely want to make the correct decisions now rather than spend more money later fixing what I should've done initially. 😣 Obviously I need to have a plan before committing to the beds....See MoreRaised ranch exterior paint color help
Comments (2)Thought this picture might help. I like the black garage door for contrast and what was done above front door, especially the inclusion of the wood. Don’t forget nice lighting. Idea for color of shingles, which works with the black but is not too stark....See MoreSigrid
