Attempting a “ reading nook”
Trying to make this area in my open concept living room a pseudo reading nook. This area has no real purpose. At one point I wanted built-ins but don’t want that huge expense since we’ll probably sell within a year to downsize. I guess the idea is to make it its own space but still blend with the overall vibe. Suggestions?

Comments (22)I think your best bet would be a very narrow table against the wall, with a couple of chairs. I’d do some searches like ‘eating table small room’ ... ‘eating area small apartment’ ... etc. Apartment Therapy might have some helpful articles, too. I like your thinking ... wanting to turn a challenging space into something usable. My first apartment was a “studio apartment” — I had only a tiny corner in the living room for an eating area. No window, just looking at an ugly wall. I think it could be a nice, charming space. And yes, I think a bistro set would work fine, too. I’d repair wall before painting and add lamps on the nightstands to create more interest as well as better balance and proportion. Regarding sitting area, it’s too lined up. Place chair on an angle (opposite to below) and create a sort of corner vignette. The painting is not working and use a smaller/lighter piece to the right of the chair, so it relates the the seating - per below. I think that rug and table might be happier as a focal point there.The table is too tall for the chairs and will make a table lamp too tall for a good reader. I would prefer a rectangular rug so the leggy chairs could sit entirely on it and be grounded. I'd remove the more casual tab top curtains. They're a bit bedroomy for this space. 2 years agolast modified: 2 years agoWell, I typed a longer entry with descriptions but it didn't post. Here are two photos from my reading nook and my book nook, for possible inspiration. One is from my current house, the basket holds books and magazines I actually want to read. The other is from my previous apartment, holding my professional book library.

2 years agoThe more I thought about this space, the more I moved away from the “reading nook” concept. I really did just want to fill the space. To just look at this area of the room it appears busy I’m sure, but not when you step back and look at the whole space. It really has come together as it’s own separate area while blending with the living room and kitchen. The room itself is a large open concept with defined areas and with 10’ ceilings. I will be adding another rug and succulents to the two wall vases so they’re not over powering. The items on the shelves are a work in progress. I’m happy with the outcome and my husband even stated he really liked the area.
