Will primed trim be ok if it rains?

I’m working on trimming out my porch exterior and finally have a day of no rain tomorrow. The trim I have is all primered, some is a flat primer and some has almost a shiny white finish, but it’s not pvc it has like a particle board backing. I want to at least get the trimmed installed tomorrow but am not sure I can get a coat of paint on it before it rains again. Will that be ok or should I paint it before installing?

Could you show a picture?

I try to prime (even pre primed material) and paint (2 coats) all sides of exterior trim. Prime and paint cuts as it is being installed. Caulk. Paint 3rd coat in place.

Factory primer is not good quality.

Actually, lightening is very good for the earth. It regenerates the magnetic field and stimulates things to grow. I tie pieces of nylon stockings on my tomato cages to help generate static electricity created by the wind's friction to help stimulate my tomato plants. Without the wind and the static it creates (lightening being a major result of that), plants would actually do very poorly and would die. We are having yet another cold spell - this is the fifth time that Winter has returned to Oklahoma (Kansas, Arkansas and Missouri too). I just set my tomatoes and peppers out this past week, and normally I would begin harvesting Early Girl tomatoes by May. We are getting lots of wonderful rain and I am greatly thankful for that, but these cold spells are ruining everything and preventing us from being to start a garden. All the plants that the local nurseries and garden centers have put out have been ruined over and over again. I am putting pots and buckets over my veggie plants, but cannot plant anything else or sow warm weather crops until this is finally over...and who knows when the heck that is going to happen? Even the Weather men are stumped by this crazy weather. What few roses have started to bloom (that usually bloom in April) are all ruined and puny looking things. They ain't fit for even the bugs to eat! Phooey! Now the weathermen are saying that with the tornado season just kicking off (May is our peak month), it is predicted to be the worst year for tornadoes ever. More of them and stronger ones too. Swell! Can't win for losing.

Marilyn, The closest river is 11 miles away and several hundred feet lower in elevation, so not to worry about the rivers. Hope all my Texas friends are safe and out of harms way. My younger son lives in Spring, just north of Houston. Haven't heard a peep out of hims in weeks. Spring has several swampy areas. I bet they are wading. Normally, the snakes there are just awful. Can't go out in the back yard in summer for all the copperheads, and talk about mosquitoes! Can't imaging how it must be right now with all this rain. Jeez! Bet the Geckos are loving it though. :) BTW, the Four O'Clocks are doing fabulously. I expect them to start blooming soon. We've had two whole days of sunshine and I was able to mow and trim the grass. Yippee! All my flowers and tomatoes are so happy! But, as I write this, huge thunderheads, probably the ones you mentioned Marilyn, are boiling and rolling in and I think I am beginning to hear some far off rumbling. Boo Hiss! ~ Annie

which is a better product - hardi color plus or hardi primed?

If you want a better paint job overall DO NOT get the color plus, and have everything site painted after install. This is usually more expensive. If you have the option of getting the color plus material at the same price as primed then go for it! I cant imagine why this would be unless they will not be painting it after the install which is normally the only way it can be cost competitive. Having the color plus installed (if its really is the same price)could mean less work for the painter. Fewer coats equals less cost. Iam sure what your builder means is that you can have color plus without further on site painting or primed with site painting. On-site painted will produce better results as long as you have competent painters.

I actually only use 123 for wall priming only and will use the 046 Fresh Start for trim priming. The main reason you want to use what the manufacturer recommends is so that when something goes wrong, you can at least maintain that you did everything the way they recommended. Plus, don't forget they do a lot of testing and Advance is a special paint since it's a hybrid, I have dedicated lines for spraying oil and latex, since cleaning the sprayer completely is a real pain, plus as the others have said oil based primer is really not needed for this application.

Not familiar with that type of trim.

I see this is a follow up to your is it necessary to paint this before reinstalling quarter round trim? thread.

I'd use a good quality caulk like Quad Max or similar after cleaning and painting to bed the quarter round in. You will need mineral spirits to clean up.

To answer your question, primed trim is OK to get rained on. I like to caulk if possible prior to rain to help keep water from getting into cracks.

Are you sure that quarter round is rated for exterior use?

I agree with ci_lantro. That looks like MDF, which is not suitable for exterior trim. Humidity, moisture, and rain are going to cause that to swell and self-destruct. Save yourself a redo and install trim that will hold up outside.

Get some pvc trim like Azek for that spot. You don't have to worry about failure or priming/painting. That mdf trim is not an exterior product.

Did you flash that spot?

I took the mdf stuff back. Wasn’t thinking clearly. I bought all the pvc in the store and am still gonna be short. I also bought some actually primed WOOD quarter round. Will that be ok to get the job done or should I wait until the pvc is back in stock?

The primed quarter round could be finger jointed. I'd wait until you can get more pvc, today's pine doesn't last long in situations like yours.

I think I will wait. What’s another few days? Took a week’s vacation to do several projects including painting, trim and replacing screen on my porch. It’s now rained 3 of 4 days lol
