The difference between new construction doors/windows and replacement doors/windows is fairly simple. New construction doors/windows have a mounting flange that rests on the wall sheathing(plywood/OSB/etc.) The doors/windows are installed before the final wall treatment(siding). Using new construction doors/windows on a house with siding in place means removing/cutting the siding to allow the flange to rest on the sheathing. Replacement doors/windows do not have that flange, allowing for installation without disturbing the siding. Some trimming is necessary with either type.

Before you decide on either project, visit one of the recent jobs and make a visual inspection. Yes, retro can look very tacky when they stick a vinyl window inside an alumnimum frame (to save any damage to stucco). You want the most visible light for your dollar. A complete tear always gives you maximum visible light in the opening. Before you buy, inspect! Michael

the higher end windows are offering "sound" windows.....STC glass which is two different thicknesses . We are going with Marvin and the STC glass is adding about $1300. to the quote [3-4 windows]. Here are ways this has been done in the recent past: 1. laminated ...very expensive 2. triple pane...very heavy unit and with any glass seal failure you can have the failure in more places 3. variable thickness of two panes ...this has come in cheaper than laminated and seems to be what will be offered going forward from the window lines that are keeping up with demand. The reality is people are moving into urban areas...high density and noise is becoming more of a problem ...expect to see MORE of the Noise reduction window glazing.
