floor tile dilemma

I recently remodeled our bathroom. I bought a really interesting tile that was made to look old. Now that i see it in our bathroom it just looks old and dirty and I’m starting to regret my choice. Question: is it possible to glaze the tiles with white so that it covers up the tile? Ive heard of bathtub reglazing. Can we do something similar?

If you are that unhappy with the tile, you just may have to replace the tile. There are so many shades in your current tile, that fixing it would be a bit difficult.

Glazing would most likely cover up the pattern.
I like the tile and think you can embrace it.

Add a bath mat.
And show the rest of the space.
If your not happy, I’d say you’ll most likely have to redo it or learn to live with it.

Brutuses, Thank you! I just tried my 12 X 12 samples and I can only fit 2 on the diagonal in my skinny long foyer hallway and three on the diagonal in my front foyer that I had thought was wider! I guess 12 X 12 is the best sized tile for my foyers. i want to go with bigger tiles for my kitchen on the diagonal. Bill Vincent, what is the name of that tile in the bathroom that I love and I know would look great in my bathroom? Is it a porcelain ceramic? My monitor has it very light but with shades of variation in it and very rich looking.

The electric heating coils will cost $$$$$. Just so you know. The cost of the finish should be in line with the cost of the renovation/house. It would be weird to spend $10/sf on the heating (which does NOT heat the room....only makes the floor feel warmer than ice) and then $2/sf on the finish. The stone isn't the expensive part either. It is the INSTALLATION labour. A porcelain tile over concrete can be laid (an expensive Canadian city) for $12/sf = labour ONLY. A STONE TILE is going to cost $15/sf for labour (same city). The cost of the material extra and it is a FRACTION of the overall costs. As someone who is cost conscious (I hate in-floor heating because it is SOOOOO d@mned expensive) I like cork floating flooring. Of course I'm a cork flooring EXPERT so I know how to keep a cork floor happy and healthy for decades. I also know cork will fade. And dimple. And have small scratches (which I can fix 'cause I know how). It is WARM...and SOFT and QUIET. Sooooo warm.....hhhhhhmmmmm. Warm and comfy. A HIGH END cork floating floor = $10/sf + 2/sf labour to install. At that price, you haven't even paid for the IN-FLOOR RADIANT HEAT let alone the stone/tile and the labour to install all of that. Again, I'm a cork flooring specialist who values the value of a practical floor. It is your home and your price point. Before you look into cork, you will need to determine if you can handle living with cork. The cork isn't the issue. It is the human beings who have expectations that are inappropriate for cork/wood flooring. Cork is "just a thought".

Will show the rest of bathroom next week when vanity is put in (took 6 months to get the vanity-supply chain issues). I really am trying to embrace it as i do like the tile, but it may have been more appropriate in an italian villa and not a suburban house built in 1995! i have a tendancy to rush into decisions and this one was one of those times! I like the pattern, just not the "aged look" surrounding it. Just looks dirty!!!!

And i;m not a neatnick by any stretch of the imagination, so if the dirty look is annoying me, you can bet it looks unclean!

with the proper cleaning, ecoprimer you could have a colored microcement installed

What is microcement? I actually like the current tile design, I just don't like the aged look. It looks dirty. I was thinking a thin slightly transparent white glaze could help brighten it up without obliterating the design. Thoughts?

I have the same tile in both of my bathrooms and love it! I think if you put a different style light you could tie it together better. Here is mine. I also use dark gray bath mats. The half bath has white baseboards like yours and a dark gray rug.

What color grout did you use?

You might be able to solve this by painting the walls more of a creamy white. I would keep your trim a true white but adding a cream tone might help that tile blend in and not seem dirty against your white walls, trim, and counter. Maybe try a big swatch and see if it helps.

I think the grout was a sand color. Sarah, when you clean the tile, how can you see if they are actually clean? The fake aged spots throw me!

Lol well, I guess they do always look a little dirty but I know they're clean. I did use a charcoal grout, which helped define the tiles better, and didn't add to the dirty

It's a great pattern, but -- yeah -- it does kinda have a "before" look.
