Windows Design Dilemma

New Windows installed...Interior Window caulk is discoloring in spots.

Had all new windows installed in house in February of this year (2021). Already have some areas where the new interior caulk is discolored, and has gotten worse over the short time it was installed. First picture is of a bedroom window. Has a small area where the new caulk is quite dark. Second picture is of a small bathroom window. Caulk is a lighter color and is discolored approximately half the length of the window. Was just going to recaulk over these areas and then paint, but I am wondering if I have a bigger issue here. Just to clarify, I had 10 Windows total replaced. Some windows have no issues with the caulk. Doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason as to which ones are having issues. Any help is appreciated.

What type of caulk was used? Have you noticed and water in those areas? That may be typical of rust forming behind the caulk. You may want to call back the installer and have this investigated.

+1. Haven't seen caulk turn that color. My guess is that it is rust coming from behind.

Very, very, very, very, very critical to be properly caulked/sealed. Also equally likely not to be, but it's better that you are trying than to ignore and just hope for the best. The type of caulk depends upon the adjoining materials. Who does it depends on the site; i.e. the window/door installers 'should' be responsible for following the manufacturer's sealing requirements. The folks that install the housewrap 'should' be sure all seams are tight and any rips repaired. Usually [although it varies] the guy that runs the pipes through the wall is the one that makes sure the surrounding opening is properly closed and sealed -- and in my experience is the one least likely to follow through since apparently the interest is in the pipe and not in the hole in the wall! So the mason is more to be relied upon for being sure that holes aren't in the wall. The person to make sure the cracks, holes, tears, rips, uneven spots, seams, etc are properly caulked, sealed, taped, etc is usually either the crew foreman or the GC, but you should not depend upon either to be observant. Sheesh, you can't even really depend on anyone knowing the proper window installation, so try to get the work done by following the manufacturer's instructions first and then depend on the crew's experience second! There are a number of sites which give blow-by-blow directions, spend your time learning a bit just so you can recognize the actions taken -- and maybe notice if the proper actions are not taken. We are needing to replace our windows. Our house was built in 1988. We live in St. Louis, MO. We currently have builder grade aluminum windows. I very much like the windows except for the condesation that happens during the winter time. I assumed I could solve this problem by getting newer aluminum windows with a thermal break. But, per a window installer who came to the house to provide a quote (Genesco), he commented the aluminum windows we have already have a thermal break. So, my question: Is there an aluminum window out there that provides a decent amount of insulation. Or is that an oxymoron? I, like other people who have posted, am somewhat paralyzed by the complexities of picking a window that will work well. Another question: I saw the Pella vinyl windows. They had two styles--the entry level and then the next higher level. On the next higher level the entire frame was smooth. There was no seam where the corner of the frames met. Since there was no seam, does this mean the corners were not welded, and therefore, the window will not hold up as well? Thanks so very much for any input.

If it's only been a few days its possible the damage was done (and it's already too late...) before you brought it home, sadly. Have you watered it since acquiring? My home depot lithops experience is that I watered mine once, and that was enough to do it in. Timing is everything with lithops... not sure if mine had been already been abused, or one poorly timed watering is enough to do them in. About the actual damage, it -could- be oedema, I don't recall seeing anything like that on mine, but maybe I didn't notice it. Daniel

may not have anything to do with the caulk per se but may have to do with rust creeping in somewhere.

The windows that were installed were vinyl. I am very inexperienced at this stuff...with vinyl windows would I still have a rust issue? Not fully sure which kind of caulk they used. The color change happened almost immediately. We had 3 windows casings that needed to be replaced and a different guy did those. We are not seeing any issues with discoloration on those windows. Assuming he used a different type of caulk. The window with the darkest color change is a window on the side of the house that is fairly protected from the rain.

It's no caulking issues I have ever seen. Call the installer, have them remove some of the caulking, and check behind it. Concurrently, re-inspect the exterior flashing and waterproofing details.

Talked to contractor, and sent pics. He is talking to installer today. He said windows are vinyl so not sure where rust would be coming from. Did not get name of Caulk from him but he said it is high quality caulk recommended by James Hardy company. I certainly appreciate the comments and help.

This has nothing to do with caulk and everything to do with installation, probably flashing.

Contractor is sending a guy out today...supposedly. We will see what they say.
