Lavender's layout is much better! A few more things... What are the spaces around the Kitchen being used for? They're empty on your layout. Right now, you have all three primary work zones (Prep, Cooking, Cleanup) crammed into a small space in your kitchen with a lot of unused space around it. While I assume one is your "Dining" Room, what about the other spaces? I would much rather see your Prep & Cooking Zones separated from your Cleanup Zone. This would allow others to work in the kitchen at the same time - whether it's prepping & cooking as well or cleaning up or even just getting a snack. Where is your MW? I would put it under the counter in the island on the end across from the refrigerator to keep it on the periphery. I would get rid of the under-counter oven and get a range (more on this below). With Lavender's layout, you have the zone separation and plenty of workspace where you need it. You also have more dish storage space - which you appear to be a bit short on in your layout. . Wall Oven Mounted Under the Counter... Personally, I don't like wall ovens under the counter b/c they are closer to the floor than an oven in a range - so less ergonomic than a range. In my opinion, if you are mounting a wall oven under the counter, you are better off getting a range. If you plan to "age in place" or are average height or taller, it can be an issue. I strongly recommend finding a place where there is one installed and check it out. We had planned to put one under the counter in our Kitchen until we saw it installed - that was an eye-opener and we immediately nixed the idea. When open, the door handle barely missed the floor - which means the racks were much lower than the racks in a range's oven. . Aisle Widths... I can't tell b/c you have no measurements on your drawing, but the aisle b/w the island and the refrigerator doors & handles should be at least 42". That will give you about a 47" to 48" aisle b/w the island and the counters next to the refrigerator. Since all three primary work zones are crammed into that small space, you will need the wider aisles. . Powder Room... What are the internal dimensions? Ours is 4'6" x 4'6" and I would not want it any smaller in either direction. I don't think the location is too bad, but one thing you might consider is extending the interior long wall a bit to give it more privacy within a small "alcove". . Something to keep in mind about seating at the island... Each seat needs 24" of linear space (so you have room for 2 seats in your layout in the opening post) If seating is counter-height (highly recommended and yours does appear to be counter-height), then you need 15" of clear knee/leg space - that means 15" after accounting for cabinets and decorative door fronts/end panels placed on the back of the cabinets. (Or doors if you have additional cabinets opening under the seating overhang.)

cpartist: Great comments! I totally agree with you about moving the chairs and loosing the one on the end of the island (and adding in the prep sink & trash). Aisles are 4ft wide, except the one created between the island and the cooktop/oven which is 5ft The 21ft width and all of the entrances to the space are a challenge any thoughts on reconfiguring the space (maybe I need to use a range to save space?). I haven't quite figured out what to use the cabinets on the bottom, or the ones near the refrigerator for yet - one thought is to put a larger recycling center there perhaps, or a charging/mail station? There is an exit to the deck (and barn) on the left side of the sketch. The main entrance cooridor is located on the bottom left of the sketch blfenton: on the bottom of the sketch there is a hallway between the great room (left) and dining room (rt). In the hallway there are closets and the closest closet has a washer/dryer)

Cheri....here's another idea. It gives you potentially 6 Prep Zones or 5 Prep Zones + Cleanup Zone. It does have 3 sinks, but by forcing an island in this space, you need it if you want the peninsula to be useful as prep space. Since this is a beach house and you said there will frequently be multiple cooks, this seemed the best use of space. The island, however, is smaller than in any of your layouts. To be blunt, you did not have wide enough aisles around the island in your layouts to make it useful - in fact at that size with such narrow aisles, it would be an annoying obstacle & hindrance rather than a help. Despite its reduced size, it will still be useful since now there should be sufficient aisle widths to accommodate multiple people. . The lower counter is to the left of the range top -- 38" worth of it (35" cabinet space + 3" b/w that cabinet & the corner on the left). This should give you plenty of workspace at the lower height. Note there is 15" of emergency landing space immediately adjacent to the range top on the left and then the lower counter starts. That 15" should be sufficient for emergencies since there is plenty of space to the right of the range top. . Both the wine cooler/refrigerator and the MW drawer are in a 52+" Snack/Beverage/Coffee/Tea Center. You can easily fit a coffeemaker in that space and with the 3rd sink in the peninsula, water is close by if the coffeemaker is not plumbed. This will keep casual traffic - someone getting a cup of coffee or a glass of wine or even a quick snack - out of the primary work zones and out from underfoot. The refrigerator is nearby as well. . The ovens have been moved closer to the center of that run so they do not open into a person sitting at the end of the peninsula. In addition, there is now landing space on each side of the ovens as well as across the aisle on the island, if necessary. This is a much safer and functional location! . There are two trash pullouts. The 21" to the right of the cleanup sink is accessible from the Cleanup Zone, Cooking Zone, and Prep Zones on that side of the island & range top. The 18" one is on the peninsula for access not only on that side of the island and range top but also for the Snack/Beverage Center and other outsiders who want to throw something away. .
