Family Room & Can you have too much leather?
Comments (11)Well, I see the bench is gone, I agree with the poster who mentioned it looked like dual coffee tables. Plus your DH thinks he won, so how bad can that be? LOL You need more lighting, so perhaps a floor lamp behind the center corner of the sectional, or at least a lamp on the cabinet behind it. I don't like the queen anne table in here, but I believe it has since moved into the LR. The small table is kinda cool, but I would move it out away from the end of the couch a bit, so it stands as an interesting piece and will feel more important. I think your rug needs to be turned the other direction - It will flow better with the space. I would think about sliding the tv and cabinet over to the right, and you would have room for another chair there; perhaps one of the extra yellow ones from the LR? The other one could go in the corner between the kitchen and family room, where the little cabinet is in the pix, that has now gone to the LR as well. Your fireplace is cool, and if the pix is telling the true story, the right half of the fireplace sticks out further than the left. I would do some kind of paint treatment to accentuate that. Perhaps paint the right side that sticks out, above the hearth to the ceiling, in a deeper shade of the wall color. Then pull a red from the rug and do the receding part of the fireplace in that color, as well as the brick under the hearth. Paint the hearth ledge the deep brown of your couches. Try the sunburst mirror over the firebox itself. Take down the other art, and let the colors be the art. You could add a long, low rectangular planter on the right side of the fireplace, filled with sgrasses, reeds, etc. or bamboo with a layer of river rock covering the soil (if you use real plants) or the foam (if you use dried or faux....See MoreCan you have too much brown?
Comments (17)I truly appreciate all of the insight and suggestions here! This is such a great forum! I have no idea about the accents. I think with the exception of the art over the mantle I will be starting from scratch. So I'm going to try to look at it with fresh eyes. I was thinking of woven woods on the windows. I'm been envisioning that for some time. We have recessed lights as well as the sconces and eyeballs (2) and there is a table lamp to the right. There is just not a lot of natural light in the room. I could use some more light, I agree, but I have been trying to get an electrician to come to add some outlets and they don't come back (even the ones who did MAJOR work on our kitchen renovation - but that's another post!) That love seat will work great in the office, but it's too small and not cozy. Also, I think the whole room may be a little too "gold". Thanks for the compliments about the artwork! It's our first "real" art and we agonized over it. We really love it. Rosemary - good luck shopping. You have a huge space there - I'm envious of all your possibilities! Comments (18)O.T. dianalo: I'll drink to that! Clueless: I've begun planning my "reveal" (estimated 2014 or so) when I will announce "Florantha's Sea of Oak" kitchen with pictures. We've only got oak in the kitchen for wood items, but we've got a lot of it--walls, cabs, window trim, doors plus bookcase, desk, and range niche. And we've got Ikea beach butcherblock adjacent to range--has same color range as the cabs. We did try to tame the impact of all that oak grain by not staining the oak. Remains to be seen whether anyone but us will actually be able to stand it all. Many of my decisions were made in reaction to the certainness of the pushy grain. But ... we hope to avoid the evil orange 1980s oak that has been so criticized on GW in the last few years. DH loves wood. He's just finished sanding and finishing the Pella wood windows in the room--he demanded real wood even if I was adamant that I wanted white vinyl windows which wouldn't be subject to winter condensation trouble. You can tell who rules the roost here, at least on the big stuff that drives all other decisions. He's slowly inserting oak replacements in the painted woodwork rooms throughout the old part of the house; he'd already put oak throughout our 1980s addition. Comments (14)I know someone who has light oak floors and walls covered with light oak bookcases, with light oak, mission style furniture. I joke about it being a squirrel's nut store, but with the shelves full, paint on the walls, some Persian rugs and brightly colored art, it really looks fine. I don't remember what your floor is. If you have some contrast with the cabinets, it'll be fine! I've seen a lot of wood kitchens with wood walls and wood floors in wooded glades, and done right they actually look fantastic! Very easy on the eyes, and all the wood inside doesn't compete with the views. Instead it makes them come alive. The green would be pretty too, though I think white would be distracting if you have a lot of windows. I know how you feel. I have vertical bamboo, and put cabinets wherever I had a wall. I was worried it would be a bamboo forest and considered painting the pantry. My GW friends called it "gumby" (it was just computer generated green). I didn't do it. There's a lot of bamboo, but with all the other finishes, it doesn't loom, and isn't overwhelming after all. My advice? If you still love the oak, get the oak. And choose a contrast wall color (such as the green), and put some bright accents in, maybe some shiny or light colored hardware, and enjoy it!...See MoreJessica Claire
