Burnt Ridge told me they used at least two different species of rootstock for their persimmons -- mine was a Hana Fuyu -- and they didn't keep record of the rootstock with their inventory. I think they said they used D.v. and D.k., but I can't remember precisely which two they said they used. Another possibility is that I just didn't scratch deep enough on the rootstock. I could very well be wrong about what's going on, but I do know that a scratch test up in the tree looks very good and that there's no sign of any growth yet, even though my other kakis broke dormancy a couple weeks ago and are leafing out now. I did hedge my bet by cutting some scions (although it's not much of a hedge with my kaki grafting success rate to date.)

It is a seed strain, so in theory, it should produce viable seed rather easily. I don't recall the relative size of Coreopsis seed, but my guess would be that it is quite small. Why not, just try sowing some of the "chaff" indoors to see what happens?

Ann, Of course, the best practice is to sow them immediately. I always plant seeds the day the pod opens. That's the best way to assure the best viability. It goes downhill from there. I was just sharing my recent experiment, since I had seeds from nearly 50 crosses just sitting around. Before tossing them out, I thought I should see if they were still good. I took several (no Johnsonii crosses) and floated them. Within 10 days, there were signs of sprouting. You weren't contradicting me Ann...you may not agree with how I did something, but we all have value to share. It just was to show that you might be lucky and even if you haven't provided any special care to the seeds, they want to survive. The house was kept at 68-78 all year, with relatively high humidity (this is Houston after all). So, maybe the humidity helped. Don't know.... Similarly, I have pollen from the past 2 years in pill bottles sitting on the counter, and I have had some luck with it this year. Have only tried a couple of crosses, but 1 did take. Kristi

I grew my seeds in a flat with good quality potting soil mixed with sand, and I just trans-planted the little guys two day ago into their own little pots. Since I grew mine outdoors in the morning sun, there's no transitioning necessary... I just placed the individual pots right where the seed flat had been. They get morning sun, until the sun passes overhead, and then they get the reflection of light from the white garage they are set in front of. In your case, you may want to slowly transition your seedlings, after trans-planting, into a location that gets some sun. The more light they have, the faster and stronger they will grow. Morning sun is less harsh than afternoon sun, so keep that in mind when looking for a good location to keep the pots in. As for the seeds that haven't germinated... I have found that some varieties are extremely slow to germinate, and some have taken over a month to sprout. I have also found that the fresher the seed, the better the germination rate... seed that I harvested last fall has a much lower rate, already, than seed harvested toward the spring! I never give up on seeds, though, and I'll leave them to sprout in their own time... I planted my flat of seeds on May 16th, and up until about a week ago, the occasional straggler would sprout, and poke its little leaf through the soil surface... so, I'd say that if seeds haven't germinated by the end of 3 months, they're probably not going to. Incidentally, when I trans-planted my seedlings, I used a good quality potting soil mixed with some sand... they'll stay in this until they get much older and bigger. Once I am ready to re-pot them again, I'll use a different medium... one that has larger particles and drains much faster.
