Has anyone ever seen a window with no trim molding? Modern?
Comments (21)I know I'm kind of an oddball, but I am about the only person in a development full of no-trim windows who seems to like them. Several of my larger windows are drywall boxed in between the studs. Just spent a fortune replacing a couple of other windows and had to decide whether or not to trim existing windows to match their new neighbors. Contractor thought I was crazy for even considering leaving the old ones as is. We compromised. I still have the untrimmed boxes, but now they are faced in wood instead of drywall. It's a different look, but it's simple and clean. Goes well with my more streamlined tastes. Whatever you decide, here's a tip for painted windowsills. Since mine were boxed in drywall, they were painted. To keep the bottom sill looking fresh, I started always painting just the top side of the bottom sill in bright white washable paint, like the kind one might use for a kitchen or bathroom. No matter how much dust would accumulate in the house, it was always just a quick wipe to make it look like it was freshly painted....See MoreFrom mid-century modern to modern exterior

Comments (21)Can we see the floor plan too. We need that to see how it relates to the exterior. Unfortunately it appears that you tried to take every single element you liked on each of those houses and incorporate it into your house. However, good design means paring down. Just like when a woman gets dressed to go out to a formal party, she doesn't put on every piece of jewelry she owns and doesn't put on so much makeup you can tell her face is painted, so it is the same with good house design. Note that all your inspiration houses have one roof style, a gable roof style. Note how they all pretty much have one window style. Note how there are not three different materials thrown on willy-nilly without thought to the overall appearance. Instead the materials work as a cohesive whole. May I ask who designed your house? Before you go any further, I highly recommend you read the book What Not To Build. It was extremely helpful when I started my build and I learned a lot from it. Comments (11)Just want to say, this is an Australian house, and I don't see as much painted brick here as there apparently is in the US. Stuccoed, yes, but not painted. This house is a modern version of a true Federation house (named after the period in which they were popular, around Australia's Federation in 1901). Tile roofs, corrugated metal bullnose roofs over the patio, and fancy fretwork or wrought iron filigree in the framework under the bullnose, were pretty common in the era. I think that's what Diana's comment about stripes on the porch refers to: it's actually the corrugation in the patio roofing. Here's a photo of a heritage cottage with these features:...See MoreRelated Professionals
