Design Dilemma Paint Exterior

Bungalow Exterior Help Please

Hi! I recently purchased my first home and I am having a dilemma on how to remodel the exterior. I know I want to make a larger porch and clean the bushes (will most likely get rid of and make the porch front facing with a walkway but that will come later on).
My main question is the color. I thought maybe to paint the stone white, clean up the the white siding, paint the door fully black and give a fresh coat of black on the shutters? But then I thought maybe a deep blue for the siding with a wood door would be nice too but I don’t know what color to do the stone? Any and all ideas please!

How old is the roof? Right now the roof & stone don't really complement each other. I would not paint the stone. I would paint the trim around the door white.

Oh, thanks! I like the white trim, too. I tend to prefer stronger colors (we painted the door blue, from a very blah brown), but a "neutral" tone would probably give more options for landscaping. I'm leaning towards ... BM Brewster Gray or something along those lines? (With a red door?) My husband is voting for a light tan.

Thanks everyone for the great tips. I'll drop the red trim idea. FWIW, here's an old picture before we repainted (pardon the car in the front, we'd just bought a Prius. Matches the trim of the house, lol). FWIW, I hated that bright red trim, though at Xmas the door looked pretty with a wreath. Brown Dog thanks for all the tips. (on the mock up, I ran out of time. I actually am supposed to be doing something else right now, now getting sucked into Houzz! ;) Thanks for the point of all the design elements fitting together. That's good advice. BTW, yes my gardening style is "controlled chaos." In that shot, the sweet peas were running a muck. ;) Another question: I am keeping these original windows but in the back, adding Marvin Ultimate (wood interior, alum exterior). The windows will be trimmed out to match the front. If your town allows a porch on your extension you can put chairs and an umbrella but I don’t think it will improve the exterior of the house. And make sure you get a pro to determine how much weight that flat roof can bear. Lots of terrible stories about people on balconies that collapsed during a party. And be sure if you put furniture up there it is secured against unexpected winds landing it on the heads of people below if you aren’t there. many beach towns look very different with respect to color choices. Tropicsl shocker colors are the fun in many gulf coast towns but new engand beach towns are different. So go with the local sensibilitie. Beach bungalows are supposed to look slapped together and casuaL. That is part of their character, and who wants to spend their vacations doing home improvement?

Joyce-good news! Bad news! Choosing exterior paint colors is difficult so given you have no time, would you consider white siding and light gray trim? If you want color with west facing home in Florida is tough. Let me find some inspirational photos for you. Bbl

I think the black is too intense with the stone and with the white. This type of stone is not my favorite but I do not know that I would paint it. The roof is a kind of unfortunate color with the stone. It makes the stone look more yellow and the roof look pinkish.

What do you suggest by minimizing color?

The roof is only a few years old so I don’t want to really do anything with that. I agree, it doesn’t complement it at all! Painting the trim is a nice idea.

Hm the brown is a good idea!

Gray doesn't go with the stone or the roof. Depending on your budget, you could cover the existing (or new larger) porch with a roof and two posts. Then you would have a more functional entry (no one wants to be out in the rain trying to get in the front door as quickly as possible) and the appearance of the stone would be minimized. Painting the door trim white is still a good idea, and changing the color of the front door and shutters would help, too. The trim on the roof peak over the front door probably should be white too. I like the earlier suggestion of a green front door. You will need to view paint samples next to the stone in order to see what shade of green works. I think you would have difficulty getting a blue or red to work, but colors look different in person than they do on a computer.

The reason people always recommend against painting brick or stone is because those materials need to be able to breathe. Painting them also creates an ongoing maintenance requirement that doesn't exist with plain brick or stone.

If the roof is new, you should be able to get the shingles and extend the gable out as an open gable portico over a deeper porch. That will help eliminate the flatness of the gable as it is now. I would visit with someone at Romabio about changing the color of the stone to work better with the roof color. No black on your cottage, please.
