Review of SubZero fridge, Asko dishwasher, Wolf oven

We did a kitchen reno about 2 1/2 years ago. We bought a Sub-Zero refrigerator with built in water/ice dispenser through the door, Wolf electric wall oven (gas is not available in our building), and Asko dishwasher. About a month after installation, the dishwasher panel stopped working. A technician ordered the part which took about a month to arrive and repaired it. We haven’t had a problem since. (I hope I’m not jinxing myself.) Then the ice maker stopped working. A different technician is responsible for that product in our area. Again, a part had to be ordered and again, it took about a month to arrive. The icemaker clogs up frequently. It’s a poor design. In order to fix the clog, the whole unit has to come out. About 6 months after the oven was installed, it caused us grief while cooking our Christmas turkey. The oven kept turning off. We thought the electrical system was overloaded in our building with everyone cooking at the same time. Now, here we are in September 2021. I’m cooking a brisket on convection bake which takes many hours to cook at a low temperature. Once again, the oven keeps turning off and/or switching to another setting such as dehydrate or proof. We have a call into a technician. Hopefully, we’ll get a reply soon. We thought we were buying top of the line products.

Are there household refrigerators with icemakers that directly produce crushed ice? I've never seen one that makes anything other than cubes or crescents ... crushed ice is via a grinder in the door dispenser that activates when the crushed option is selected on the dispenser controls, otherwise the intact cubes or crescents are dispensed.

Thank you for this information. We are considering a SubZero fridge but we are huge consumers of ice so the note about the ice unit clogging is very concerning. One question- does it make ice quickly or take a while to fill up?

It seems to fill up quickly. The icemaker makes only cubes, not crushed ice like other brands offer. The other thing that is a bit odd about the icemaker is that the dispenser is on the fridge side, not the freezer side.

I could certainly be wrong but from the sound of your post you sound like someone who has "aspired" to have a SubZero fridge not necessarily for a functional reason but to have the brand. It sounds as if you're going all out - two Miele dishwashers, etc. - so why not just go for the SZ? If you think about all the people who have been keeping their food chilled without investing in SZ, there has to be something people "value" about SZ other than it's functional ability to keep food chilled or frozen that would make them pay the premimum price. Could be appearance, appeal of saying you have the brand, etc. In any case if you want one and want to spend the $ go for it. It seems you can count on repairs with any brand these days - kind of like luxury auto brands. Just because you spend alot doesn't mean it will be trouble free.

wow, that is so good to hear!! i was having a problem with the probe in my single wolf oven, called about 4:30 on monday and had a new one by wednesday. Awesome! and whats also nice is that when you call and give your name, they have all your info and seriel # of appl. so you don't have to repeat everything and dig out all your literature. maybe other companies do this also, but this as my first call for a problem. agree, that is great customer service!!!! so happy for your "surprise", that's fabulous!!!!

That was helpful. Thank you. Trying to decide between the Thermador 48" range and the GE Monogram 48" range. Looked at the Wolf, but out of our price point (you've got to draw the line somewhere!) I read that the star burners on the Therm got a bit 'overzealous' and it was hard to control or heat a smaller pot? Have you had the Therm before? Would you find this, about the burners, to be true? How about the griddle? Happy with it?

Have you thought about a Combi-Steam oven instead of just steam only? Of course it would depend entirely on how you plan to use it, but the Combi-Steam just gives you so many more options. I studied most models some time ago, and decided that having steam, convection, and broiling in one unit would work best for me, YMMV. There are many nice recipes that call for steaming/baking and then a broil finish. Other models may be available now, but for what it's worth, I ended up choosing the Miele Combi-Steam for my purposes. It's going to be installed this week, I'm told, so I'll have to delay an in-use performance review.

We’ve had icemakers in previous fridges (different brands) and they all had cubes or crushed ice.

The point I was subtly making is that the ice maker does not make crushed ice. The dispenser mechanism can produce crushed ice if it has that feature.

Can you elaborate on the ice maker clogging issue? I’m looking at a SZ model right now with the ice/water dispenser in the door.

I have an SZ fridge and have never had a problem with the ice maker. However I don't have door dispenser so it's cubes - no device to crunch them up into crushed ice.. Don't care for door dispensers and in my experience they're prone to problems.

So, if I am reading this correctly, the ASKO has been fine since its' original glitch. The Wolf range and the SubZero have on-going problems.

The ASKO dishwasher has been working fine since it was repaired. The Wolf Range had to have a new computer board put in about a month ago. It seems to be working fine now too. The icemaker in the SubZero is the problem not the door dispenser. Knock on wood, the icemaker hasn’t clogged in awhile.
