John Deere LA100 5speed problems

I'm a newbie on using riding mowers and just picked up a John Deere LA100 5speed from a local guy who repairs mowers, etc. He gave my some brief instructions, but I still don't know what I'm doing. I Googled this item and downloaded the manual, but it doesn't seem to be exactly the same model. Anyway, I was using it this morning to mow my very rough field and I stopped and tried to reverse so I could avoid a stump, and there was a loud "snap", the engine died, and wouldn't start again (totally dead). I used it yesterday for about an hour with no problems.

How can I find the appropriate manual, and figure out what happened.

I would double check that your PTO lever is parked. If so, look underneath the dash at the lever and see if the paddle on the lever is contacting the plunger of the safety switch.

Sorry to be so ignorant, but is the PTO lever the one that engages the mower blades? If so, it is parked. I did manage to get it restarted by fiddling with all of the controls, including the choke, which may have a safety switch; I haven't figured out which one was causing the problem.

1 Don't sweat it 2 It is easy to pull the rear wheels and gears to clean and lube +plus you can hopefully free the fitting up to get lube in the pivot 3 See #1 The coating you put on , no matter how it was prepped- will be sand blasted off. been there, tried that exact same thing on a new aluminum housing. 4 Just so it firmly engages. Standard cable lube is fine. deere.com may have an owners manual to cover this more precisely. 5 5 gear sets inside selected w/ shift keys. 6 Yes 7 Standard care will allow the engine to last for longer than ever required. Transmissions on these can get water in them for those than blast them w/ a hose to get clean. If the input shaft bearing seems ok, no signs of having been owned by Mr clean and the cable seems to actuate smoothly, the trans should be fine. If you want a yucky job, pull the case sometime and clean it up and re lube. Unfortunately, this year seems to be the demise of these. In my world , I've condemned 3 to death from housings starting to pit through. One wasn't too bad, but needed a clutch- which is not worth it for a machine that is decaying. I have worked at a lawn mower shop for several years. We've sold both cub cadet and John Deere. This is what I can tell you. John deere's quality has had a big drop, just like everything nowadays. one of the best mowers you can buy for the money is a cub cadet ltx 1042kw. It has a good Kawasaki engine and hydrostatic drive. If you get it from a dealer and not farm supply etc. you get a free front bumper to protect your hood when it's on the trailer or just mowing. Hoods can get over 500 dollars. John Deere about 5 years ago, was the brand I would recommend. But, now I'm afraid nothing runs like a cub. If you can spend more money on a mower, I would recommend a zforce s 48 inch. It is a true zero turn with a steering wheel. The front wheels turn like a normal mower, and the back ones spin like a stick zero turn. Just driving it is very convincing, it is very agile. It runs so smooth and is very nice to ride with the pivoting front axle. How many yards are flat like the floor of a showroom. Just my opinions of driving and working on both of them, hope I helped. Oh, if you mow several yards or a lot of land, check out the commercial line, the highest quality you can get besides a hustler. But without the 10000 dollar price tag.

Most sub $3K tractors are OK for the money and will last if not abused. I think people get into trouble when they use them beyond their engineered limits. They buy the tractor to "only" mow the lawn and end up pulling a heavy loaded cart, weighted aerator, yanking shrubs, etc... This is usually more than this price category can handle, especially from a transmission stand point. The other wild card is the terrain - hills and rough ground will burn up the tranny and kill the under carriage and steering assembly. This is why many on these posts will tell you to buy one level up from what you think you need and you should be OK. Read through some of the older posts and you'll be able to draw your own conclusion. Most guys (myself included) had to figure it out the hard way that you can usually find a great used GT for about the price of a lower end new lawn tractor. Whatever you end up with, keep it well maintained and use it within its designed limits - you'll stay out of trouble that way.

The weights hang low on the rear bracket and make your X300 look like a big tractor. If my tractor had a built-in weight bracket I'd get the weights. WWAF in the tires gets the weight below the axle... about as low as it can be. Only downside is that it's a pain to put the fluid in and if you don't add tubes the inside of the wheels may rust. If you search all the L&G tractor forums you'll find oodles of posts like yours and adding weight resolved the traction problems almost all the time.

You will need the full model number and serial number to find the exact manual, and if you're looking for a service manual it will cost you $40 to $60 bucks. It's a 234 page manual mainly showing exploded part diagrams, replacing parts, parts locations, wiring diagram, specifications and rebuilding the transaxle, engine and deck. Good luck finding a free download for a service manual but you may get lucky. A operator's manual are always free from john Deere but little use for troubleshooting problems.

When a machine won't crank (start would mean it turns over but won't run) It's because of no voltage or one of the three safety switches are not closed and locking out the starting circuit. Tom's comment would be the most obvious unless you weren't sitting on the seat or didn't have the brake engaged, all three have safety switches. Your machine will not start if the deck is engaged so the PTO must be parked as Tom stated.

The snap you heard was probably caused because your deck blades jammed on dirt or a grass clump backing up which fully extended the extension spring on the deck and locking up the motor causing a stall. When the motor stalled the extension spring snapped back the idler and extension arm when torque was removed. SNAP!

Thanks, Kevin. I was only looking for the operators manual (I saw the available of the service manual, but I'm not interested in that - I'll take it back to the guy I bought it from who did the refurbishing). I think one of the safety switches must be a little flaky, because if I move them back and forth, eventually it will turn over and start.

Got it working last fall and also this spring, but I had to fix one of the front tires, so I jacked it up, and now it won't crank again. I followed Tom's comment and looked under the hood. I assume the PTO lever is the same as the "attachment engagement lever". I moved it so that the plunger is fully depressed, but still nada. Is there a safety switch on the throttle/choke lever? When it was working, I had to carefully fiddle with it; there would be only one position where it would crank, but I can't see any electrical switch there.
