Replacing kitchen cabinet doors
Comments (10)I just had our cabinet doors replaced on our wood cabinets by a local cabinet maker. He stain matched them to our existing wood. Additionally, we switched the hinges to blum compact hinges which allowed us to get a more full overlay affect and not see as much of the face frame. I also changed a few of the doors to glass. And removed 2 upper cabinets to open up the space a little bit. Just doing this update has completely transformed the kitchen and it looks like I got new cabinets! I am very happy with how it turned out and it looks much more modern (my original cabinets were built custom to the house in 1982). Plus, the cost for doors, hinges, and new drawers and drawer fronts came to about 2,500 from a local cabinet maker. And these are quality wood doors that go with our existing very sturdy wood cabinet frames. This is significantly less than I would have paid for new cabinets which I could not afford. Also, by not changing the stain I saved myself the cost of refinishing. Costs were very important to me and my husband, but it might not be for you. I can take some photos later this evening if you are curious to see the difference it has made! The original floor, counter, and appliances are still in the kitchen. I know changing these out will update the kitchen even further. I know other people might have ripped out the dated cabinets and put new ones in, but both me and my husband did not like the idea destroying the existing cabinets that were in good shape....See MoreKitchen cabinet doors - replace? sand and paint?
Comments (13)Partial inset commonly known as 'lipped' doors. Because fully inset doors take a lot more time and skill to accomplish. Actually, the partial inset doors are a bit more 'dust-tight' because the rabbeted edge helps seal the cabinet. (As compared to overlay doors w/ Euro hinges that hold the door proud of the frame by about 1/8".) Partial overlay doors pretty much replaced them because it eliminated the rabbeting step. They're in great shape for 50 year old cabinets. Probably all solid wood/ plywood construction with no mdf or particle board. Will be good for at least another 50 years but those years would be better served as basement or garage cabinets (with care taken when removed and some overhauling--adding plywood backing, etc.) because they generally have no bells & whistles w/ the possible exception on pullout bread boards. I doubt that you can remove the medallions. Suspect that they are glued and tacked on. But you might get lucky & find that they're only tacked on....See MoreReplacing Floor in Kitchen Without Replacing Cabinets
Comments (5)You can replace just the floor. There are several cautions. Do not increase the height of the floor in front of dishwasher/other under cabinet appliance. That will prevent removing that unit if necessary. Or removing the countertop. You will need to cut the old flooring as close to the cabinet bases as possible. That becomes a huge water leak situation as well as a dirt catcher and eyesore. You will need to seal the gap and install some kind of trim to minimize dirt/water/look problems. If there is damaged sub flooring that extends under the cabinets, that is a fairly serious situation. Patching should be done by replacing the entire area---even under the cabinets. When the cabinets are replaced, matching the flooring height will be the major concern. Unless the new cabinet footprints are shorter---and expose more of the old flooring....See MoreReplacing Kraftmaid Kitchen Cabinet Doors.
Comments (12)Did you purchase these cabinets or were they already in the home? If you purchased them just go the place you bought them, they should be able to help. If they were already there, take a picture of the kitchen and a door to a place that sells kraftmaid. When you go to order them have measurements of the cabinets , it is much easier to order when you have the cabinet measurements as opposed to the door/ drawer measurements. You will also need the drawer placement ex. Top,bottom etc....See MoreCris Hayter
