where to buy better quality wood ?
Comments (5)In my area there are a lot of small lumber dealers that don't necessarily advertise in the Yellow Pages or have web sites. One I stumbled on after seeing a small sign in front of his house. Believe it or not, his lumber business is located in the basement of his house. All of his lumber is locally harvested and sawn. He doesn't stock large quantities, nor does he carry a lot of different species, but his prices are very reasonable and the quality of the wood is quite good. Another fellow I know of is well known among local woodworkers and cabinet makers, but doesn't advertise. His business is all word of mouth and is a fairly large operation. My point is that it can be beneficial to find local guy that you can trust. In your original post, you ask where cabinet makers buy their wood. Call a few up and ask them. You might find one of those small, local gems that offers good prices, selection and service to the home woodworker. Good luck....See MoreReplacing Kitchen Cabinet Doors
Comments (4)we do this work all the time, you could do it yourself but you have to find a quality door manufacturer, We use Conestoga wood specialties, but consumers can not order from them. You can buy doors from home depot, but you can be 99.9% certain they will not be quality. Your best bet may be to contact a door manufacturer that you want to use and see who carries their doors in your area. Let me know more about what you are looking for and maybe I can steer in you the right direction. Go ahead and send me an email if you have some questions. mikemoore@moorescabinets.com...See MoreInstalling cabinet door knobs
Comments (4)I used a brad-point drill bit and I eliminated tear-out on the back side (I call it the "exit wound") by clamping a piece of scrap wood behind the door. The brad point was useful, because I could be absolutely sure that my bit wouldn't walk around when I started to drill; I could push that brad point into the wood a bit to anchor it. Also--to mark the holes, I put blue painter's masking tape on the door and marked the spot w/ a pen, so I could mark them all and, check them all at once--very carefully--3 times before I actually drilled any of them. (I had unusual sizes of door pulls, so I couldn't just blithely rely on a template--but even if I'd had a template, I'd have done this sort of temporary markup.) Take your knobs to the hardware store and see if you can buy longer bolts for them, because you're right, you'll need something longer. (my drawers didn't need longer bolts, because I put the pulls on the top of the drawer front instead of in the middle; the drawer box was shorter than the decorative drawer front, so I only had to drill through the decorative front) As for the thickness of the bit you should use, it depends on your bolt; I compared the shank of my bit with the bolt from my pulls, and drilled a test hole in a scrap to see how the bolt actually slid through. I switched bits because the first one I used was the tiniest bit bigger, and the bolt wiggled a little. The next size down had a nice, snug fit....See MoreNew cabinet Doors and Drawer Fronts
