Fabric for chair - part 2
Comments (16)I like the stripe, but is it an ivory background? Since the first thing you see when looking at the wallpaper is the turquoise background, I think it would be a good idea not to make it your main color in the fabric. With the white wainscoting, and the prominence of the wallpaper, a distinct pattern only in two colors might be a good 'fit'. I also like the idea the pattern being a modern take on an old design, perfect for your gorgeous vintage chair. Comments (2)Do you have a picture of the chairs, or something similar? I just finished reupholstering a set of shieldback dining chairs for my dining room; I bought them from an antique dealer at a local flea market because I fell in love with their lines, but like your MIL's chairs, they were hard and uncomfortable. I removed all of the stuffing and prior upholstery (taking it down to the bare wood seat), added 2" high density foam, and covered that with batting and fabric. I probably should have used 1.5 inch foam but the fabric stores in my area only had 1 and 2" in the foam that I wanted. The thickness of the foam, paired with the shape of the chairs and the stiffness of my upholstery fabric caused me to have trouble pulling the corners taut; so I had to fold & crease the corners (I've never had that problem recovering prior dining chairs), which annoys me because it makes them look less professional. Like Lindac suggets, the electric knife worked well to cut and shape the foam. The front of my chairs curves, like a bowfront chest, so I traced that shape onto my foam (using the bare wood of the seat base), then used the electric knife to cut in the curve. The electric knife was key; the foam was too thick to cut the shape with scissors, and my utility knife gave me uneven edges. Once I switched to the electric knife it was smooth sailing....See MoreCan I Mix These 2 Chair Styles Around the Table
Comments (21)I just don't love the metal chairs in that kitchen. As a stand alone object I think they are ok, but I think they are out of sync with the room as a whole. Those chairs are vaguely Memphis inspired, vaguely post-Modernist, and they remind me of the movies Beetle Juice, and Ruthless People. And the horizontal bar between the loops is kind of like a towel rack, sorry :) They are whimsical, and in the right place, sure, but that isnt a whimsical room. The thing I liked about the mixed BW dining room is the Benches. I could see Two of your chairs, used as the end chairs with wooden benches that looked like your island maybe. The chairs on the ends should be the "character" pieces IMO and almost any chair you try to put with those is going to invert that, unless they are really out there....See Moreare fabric covered cornices out of style
Comments (7)I would say they are out of favor. That doesn't mean they can't be done and still be within current style trends . Does that make sense? Would it work to soften the look from the bottom up? Use a couple of orchids (real or not - though it sounds like a place real ones would like), a green plant, some bath goodies?...See MoreSammie J
