Window in shower wall

Planning for guest bathroom renovation in 1940’s rental home (Airbnb). If we move the tub to the back wall, and moving the window isn’t an option, how do you make it waterproof and tint for privacy? Would sure give us more room to work with if we could move the tub, but asbestos shingles on exterior, so don’t want to move window. Thanks in advance for ideas!

Replace the window with a vinyl window.

Make sure the rough-in stool is sloped toward the tub 3-4 degrees is enough.

Wrap Kerdi backer cloth into the window opening to seal any possible leaks.

Tile up to the window over the Kerdi cloth..

Your contractor should know the detail of how this is done. We do it all the time.

What are you going to do with the floor register?

Why move the tuba at all? It looks nicely at home where it is.

Moving it would be more work and expense than it is worth.

The glass must be tempered safety glass so whether or not you replace the window, you must replace the glass

I mounted a duravit wall hung toilet about 2 years ago in my bath. Pics are on the gallery page. You will DEFINITELY save space -- about 8-10" total. From my experience, during renovations and since, is that the steel carrier MUST be securely bolted to the studs. I am also a big guy (6'4" and 250lb) so flex was a potential issue. My remodel wasa complete to-the-studs gut and I had them double the studs and connect them directly to both the rafters and floor joists. Overkill? Maybe, but it is solid!!

Another thought would be to not run the interior wall all the way up to the ceiling. If the ceiling is 9', stop the wall at 7-1/2 or 8 feet. The downside, I guess, would be less privacy in the water closet (although I'm not sure that is very important to us) and steam from the shower would escape the shower. The advantages would be less cost, I assume, since I would not be worrying with paying for windows and waterproofing them, as well as probably being able to have one bath fan serve the whole area instead of having to have separate fans for each room.

I am not a fan of windows in showers unless they are heights that keeps them out of the regular path of direct water. Sounds like it is going to be an undertaking when it comes to the bathroom and tile work, why not close up the opening on the exterior and make the stucco repairs to put the window at the right location and height?

That inset is really beautiful! Of course we have to have screens here in DC (not only required by code, but practically unless you want your house full of bugs if you open a window at all), but the flexibility of doing an inset, a film, a curtain, a blind, or nothing is what makes me lean toward just doing clear. The cost is so low as to be irrelevant, in perspective (less than half a percent of the project cost), but it just kind of squicks me out to be making a decision that will probably be in place for so long. In the condo I last lived in before buying this house (which I sell this Friday!), I had a window IN the shower and it just had privacy film on the lower portion (it was a double-hung...bane of my existence since the top would slip down and I'd have to put step stool IN the bathtub to put the top back in place!). It worked fine for over 5 years, through all the humidity and direct sunlight (unobstructed southern exposure, so it got direct sunlight ~7 months/year), and I didn't mind it.

Thank you for the response! Agree probably not worth it. Trying to find best layout in this small bathroom. We do have an extra closet we can incorporate for extra space, if needed.

That would be great if you could add space, depending on where the space is located.

It appears that the current layout may not meet code, although no measurements were provided. The minimum clearance in front of a toilet, tub, or vanity is 21 inches. Renovating the bathroom will require bringing it up to code.

I have a shower/bathtub in front of window (1945 house) .I used a film on the lower half of window (double hung) for privacy.
