I'm pretty certain the material in my 20+ yr old shower door isn't glass-- it's too thin and light, seems to flex a little, and doesn't sound like glass when you rap it. In all this time, it hasn't scratched or etched. I've given up getting the bottom half more than nominally clean, though. Not sure it's Lexan, could be a different sort of thing. Seems to me I've read Lexan and plexi are both forms of acrylic, which is strong but prone to scratching. The Lexan protecting a local church's stained glass has become translucent, almost opaque. I bet if you call a local glass company-- a large one that does commercial buildings-- they could tell you what's available out there.

I did ours through Wilson Glass. They shipped me a kit of parts/hardware and suction cups. They placed the glass order with a local tempering plant. I picked up the glass and installed. Shipped the suction cups back to Wilson when I was finished. That was 3.5 years ago. The main things to keep in mind are that 1) you have to do the measurements, so any error is on you and 2) the glass is heavy. We did 1/2" glass, and our fixed panel (admittedly big) is about 120lb, IIRC. The 30" wide door is more like 70lb. Getting the door and panel in place took 3 people and 3-4 hours. Mostly 2 to move/position/hold and 1 to mark/drill/install hardware. Measuring for the door and panel was a challenge, and having a helper for that makes sense if it's more than just a door. Our fixed panel is 42" or so wide and has a cutout for a bench. It's held in place by 4 small clips/channels and gravity. Locating them (2 on the wall, 2 on the bottom, with the cutout in between) was also a painstaking process. If that doesn't dissuade you, go for it. I saved somewhere around $700 to $1k by DIYing it.

DIY?? I just saw that. Not even close. Just had a home full of Fleetwoods installed, 6 sliders up to 26'x9'. It took 4 glaziers about a week to install the sliders, 2 about another week to install the windows. More importantly, it takes 4 strong bodies to move a single panel using power suction grips. Weight will depend on the size and thickness of the glass of course. Frameless glass doors like you see in the photo or in a frameless shower must be installed with precision and anchored solidly. If it moves or sags, you chip or break the glass and start over. I was stunned when I received the installation portion of the quote, but fully understood after witnessing the effort.

I have not had good luck with Arcadia multi sliding aluminum doors. They look beautiful, but the first time they were installed, the contractor said parts were missing and some directions were wrong. The doors would stick and wouldn't always lock. The second time they were installed, everything worked better, but as soon as the rains came, they started leaking. The water leaks ruined my floors and went into the walls and behind cabinets. It has been 3.5 months and my house is still torn up waiting for doors to be reinstalled a third time. Arcadia, rep and installer are currently communicating about the best way to handle situation. And now on the exterior the dark bronze coating is starting to come off. Does anyone know if Arcadia door frames can withstand 3 installs? FYI - Arcadia says if one wants water to drain out of the sill, weep holes need to be ordered with the door, otherwise they are not included.
