New Build- What kind of window treatments?

We're building a new house and I haven't picked out new window treatments for over 12 years. What's currently "in"? We need blackout shades of some kind for the bedrooms, but I also need some kind of shades for various other windows throughout the whole house. We have cellular shades in our current home. Do people still have those?

I love solar shades for heat and light control they allow you to keep the view and provide daytime privacy , I mix them with either drapes or roman shades depending on your style I also use them in bedrooms along with blackout drapes . They do not provide nightime privacy so that is why I use the drapes . I like them beciause they keep your hardwood floors from fading and also all your upholstered furniture

Getting ready to start picking out mine for a new build as well. When I remodeled 2 years ago I put the black out cellular shades, honestly those are still the best for bedrooms, they basically disappear into the top of the window so along with decorate black out drapes you’ll be good for sleeping. I’m doing solar shades in most of the live-in rooms, like the tv area, club room, etc. We have a kitchen window that faces another home (and a few other random windows like that) so I’m doing the modern solar dual shades, have you seen those? They’re so cool. Bathroom windows in the showers (they’re up high) are getting privacy film, I have that now and it’s perfect, cannot see a thing through it and don’t have to worry about treatments in a wet area. That’s just some of my ideas. Have a window treatment company come to you to show you all the neat options or maybe visit a showroom. I had my builder give me a window plan with all the measurements so I could have everything preordered for when we close. I do not want to be without privacy for weeks on end, especially with custom treatments.

We have valances, curtains and sheers in our living room. We have valances and curtains and blinds in our bedroom. The smartest thing we ever did was to put blocking around ALL of our windows so I would not have to worry about what kind of anchor and if the kids pull too hard on the blinds and if the in laws pull the curtains too hard, etc, etc,. We put insulation around the half bath interior walls to decrease noise. We put insulation on the master bedroom interior walls to help decrease the noise. We put insulation behind all of the exterior plugs to help decrease to cold from the exterior. All the little things we did during the build really helped. Good call, chicagoans.

I would do some blinds on the bottom and leave the arch since this is a play room make sure the blinds have no cords.

Like KR said, try to get something ordered before you move in. We moved 18 months ago and have been gradually replacing all of the window coverings in the house we moved into. COVID has caused materials shortages and for some types of treatments you may have a long wait.

The answer on which type to use depends on what style you are decorating in. While the solar shades sound great, I don't know whether they would look right in a traditional home. They wouldn't be my choice. Some people like the look of interior shutters. Since you're doing a whole house you should be able to find a retailer who would be happy to spend hours with you to look at options. You can ask them what they sell the most of.

If you aren't getting windows with a UV coating (we did that at our previous house when we replaced the windows), have a film applied to the inside of at least your south-facing windows if you don't go with the solar shades. I use a lot of 2 inch vertical wood blinds that can be angled to keep the sun out. Patricia is right, the sun will discolor wood floors and fade upholstery in pretty short order.
