September 2021 in my hosta garden
It has been over 1 month since I last ordered any hostas. The weather is becoming good for planting again, less like the blazes of devil's oven. September is a month for the fragrant hostas, Halcyon lineage, and some of my favorite Solberg and Avent hostas to shine, while some hostas are going dormant or are already dormant.

Hibiscus aculeatus Brunswick, a pale yellow.
Coast to Coast always provides a bright spot. This one is 2 years old. It is across from Spartacus for now.

2 years agoPlum Delicious for first three, still quite blue despite my photography, and Carolina Sunshine. I think they may fertilize each other, which will probably just result in greenies.

Comments (19)I want to come visit and get some clippings for my rooting bed. You have beautiful camellias! and those beautiful helleborus must set seeds... There are a whole bunch of 2 leaf seedlings coming up under some of my helleborus. I saw them today and plan to try to gently dig them up and put them in some little pots this week. Rain is coming back in tomorrow. My winter honeysuckle is blooming and smells so yummy. One of the hybrid edgwarthias has also opened its blooms. Comments (117)utog..another silhouette pic!..this one's great too!.. your garden's looking good!..we had 2 inches of rain Wed night..I had standing water (common in our high water table neighborhood) in my usual spots..so I didn't walk around in back today.. my still unclipped ratty winter foliage on an Autumn fern..they're slow for me.. the Japanese Painted ferns look fresher than the Autumns beside them..maybe because the Japanese Painted ferns die back?.. n2hostas..my green ginger is a good spreader..plant it with some space..but my craziest groundcover is this Lamium galeobdolon..can you see the variegated plant behind this bleeding heart?..that's it.. miles..there was a post a long time ago where someone used a wide shallow container for mini's and had success.. when I clean, weed and top with compost these plants will look prettier.....See MoreAugust 2021 in my hosta garden

Comments (20)Deanna - Thanks, I love Alma Potschke. I am disappointed though that it’s more of a purple than a pink, which is what I thought AP was. But - that’s where my disappointment ends. It’s about 5ft tall at this point, covered with flowers quivering wtih bees for the past couple of weeks and some butterflies as well. It makes me feel so good to see how much late season food it supplies for pollinators. Yes, mine is floppy too. It was erect until it started to flower and was rained on repeatedly. Last year and this year, I’ve thought I should have provided some support. It’s a little much to expect a plant that tall to stand erect on it’s own. Last year after it started flopping I just put one stake hidden down around the edge and tied some string around the whole thing. That worked fine. Then I forgot to give it some support this year. It was really large though, so I divided it in the spring. Potted up two divisions and left one in the ground. The one in the ground is just as large as it was before I divided it after one season. [g] Meanwhile I just planted the other two divisions, so now I’ll have 2x more of them for the bees next year. I have a couple of other asters that I don’t remember the name of and they are floppy too and very airy, delicate flowers but like a cloud of them. I like them, I just wish I could figure out how to use them better. I have always enjoyed Sedums because they are succulent, so easy, bullet proof and stay neat and tidy and healthy looking all season but you hit the nail on the head for the only thing about them I don’t enjoy - the rusty color of the blooms once they peak. If they would just stay that nice rosy color for more than a week. [g] That soft pink color in my photo is fleeting. I can easily post a photo when it gets to the rusty color so you know mine are no different. The roses seem to still have a couple of buds on them. Julia Child looks finished. Prairie Sunrise still has 2 open blooms and a half dozen buds on it and Savannah and Beverly have shot up these 8ft tall canes and have a couple of buds on them still. Savannah last year, also had a pretty color change to the foliage when it got cold. I am enjoying them. And Beverly, after I thought it was dead and it didn’t show growth until late June, has had a great season and never saw a healthier rose bush. So I’m happy with them. The climber New Dawn on my fence really only blooms once. I also have Penelope rose mixed in with it and one of those is producing red hips right now. It is a tangled mess there right now and a lot of pruning due in the spring. I usually have a pretty good showing of leftover blooms in September and expect to have a few more in October. I’ll try to keep posting them so you can see how late they keep flowering. I’ll want to hear what you decide for a rose for next year. A fun project to figure out over winter. Love those Begonias! First 2 show Mariachi finally situated near the gate at the top of the path. Next 2 show Frozen Margarita planted at the bar with Mojito, Avocado, Cerveza, Grand Tiara, and Atlantis around a fig tree.

I add a couple to this gutter pipe garden. Newbies are Gypsy Rose (old, diminishing), Monster Ears, Chodai Ginyo, and Sun Drop.
Last is dogwood with same colors echoed in lantana flowers.

2 years agoFinally, a day off!
It is overcast today and relatively cool. The hostas that are still fully leafed out look lovely in this weather. There is a delicate perfume of sweet olive Osmanthus permeating the garden. To complete the scene of the garden welcoming me back, Lycoris surprised me with 3 flower stalks. No wonder they call it surprise lily (and hurricane lily).
